Yesterday I had my 500Mi Service. Not feeling too good about it.... I notice Brake Noises from the rear that gets worse after riding 15 mi. and also noticed that the Drive Belt is all the way against Right side when viewed from the rear (Outside edge). I don't hear any Belt noise, I hear brake squeak/rub noise when I press on the rear pedal. None of this was present Before the service. Do you think I should discuss this with the Service Dept, or Live with it? It is about a 2 hour ride to the dealer and I spent 6.5 hrs for a service visit. I had to use a vacation day to get it done and I guess scared they will say bring it in and we will "Look" at it. Opinions??????

mine has alway run to the right side, but if the tech's set it too tight to begin with it could put strain on your axle and bearings. This in turn will cause the brake to be slightly mis aligned with the rotor and could cause the squeeking. Check the belt cold and see if you have a decent ammount of movement in the belt. I would also phone the dealer up and talk to them. If there are issues it will only cause more problems.

Yep. pretty standard stuff here. LOTS of topics here about it on theVog. Check out this thread and read post #41 by OneThumb. He describes how to fix it. tracking I checked my belt tension, seems real tight, but I've never felt another one. I put the XR on a lift and rolled the tire backwards 8-10 revs and forward a few times, the belt stayed on right edge. I read the posted thread (Lots of good info. Sent the Service Manager of Indianapolis Falcone Powersports a detailed message asking his opinion, waiting to hear from him.

If your bike is cold and the belt feels tight, it's way too tight. there should be some play in the belt just by pushing on it with your finger, even if the bike is on the ground.

You can look at your axle marks and see how far off they are. Look where the axle goes in you'll see the marks now look at the other side. I'm just guessing but it sounds like your wheel is cocked to one side. If you can call them and tell them you want to be at the top of the list and go on your day off. Make sure you tell them how you waisted a vacation day witch is money out of your pocket for there bad service.

according to specs, your belt should ride on inside of rear pulley when going forward. when you stop and push bike backwards, the belt should come off the inside of the pulley slightly. Remember, your belt has to be at room tempature and rear wheel off ground before making any adjustments. If your rear whell is tracking correct and your front end is Racked right, you should be able to ride no handed very easily....if it pulls to right, the right side (looking from front)tensioning needs tightening up and vice versa. Do not over tighten belt as this will cause many probs down the line.

Your "cold belt" should have a deflection (at 10 pounds force) of one and a quarter inches. 19/32 deflection if you have an 8 ball or Ness Vision. (Less than 1/2 the deflection of a tour?) :10500: If your belt is tight when "cold", you should correct it ASAP.

Service Manger called me back and asked me to bring it In or they would pick it up. Well If they Pick it up they will have it for 6 days..... Can't go that long so I'm making another two hour trip this Saturday. he said they would check it as soon as I arrive while Hot, since thats when it reveals the worst symptoms. The edge of the belt is getting shinny so it is definatly out of alignment.

Doesn't sound like a good plan. Everything from the manual, to the gear-heads here agree that it MUST be checked while COLD. There is no spec for the hot belt tension or alignment. Spec is only for dry and room temp belt and sprockets. It says it TWICE in the manual, on the same page... must be for a reason. When my bike shop does anything with the belt they require it to cool down for at least a few hours, if not overnight.
