Accident was 4 months ago. They totaled mine. Adjuster said when she got to 18k she stopped looking. Waited around 30 minutes for the ambulance, lots of people there. Some awesome doctors and nurses at UVA.

Lots of deer in my immediate area too. In my yard and beside the road every day. They are a problem around human settlements all over the world.

When I get in the twisties I have to remind myself not to override my brakes because you never know what's around the corner. The truth be known, the drivers here are much more of a threat but that's another story. I also hunted moose for about 20 years and there is a critter you don't want to hit with any kind of vehicle. At highway speeds a collision can tear the roof right off of a car or half ton truck.

I know two people who have had deer whistles that did them no good at all. Those are the ones you hear about though. It's like loud pipes. If there were instances in which they worked and did prevent a collision, you wouldn't know about it.

That's kinda what I've thought about them. I'm sure the deer probably hear them, I just don't know that that will provide them a calming effect or at least make them high tail it in direction where I'm not. My bike isn't particularly loud, but I'm sure it made enough noise that it could be heard well in advance of my arrival. My dog always hears it and waits patiently at the window, several blocks before I get to the house. My wife says the dog "knows" the sound of mine as she doesn't get up and go to the window for anyone else.

Force yourself to keep moving.
If they gave you one of those breathing blowup toys, use it.
Pneumonia will kill you pretty quickly if you lay around too much.

My right arm has some titanium and 9 screws in it.
Extremely painful recovery.
It was weeks before I could touch my head with my right hand.

Ohioans ***** session;
In the very early 1900's, deer had been hunted so heavily that Ohio claimed that there weren't any in our state.
As a kid growing up in Northeastern Ohio, it was a rare sight to see a deer.
Today, since most small towns and cities don't allow hunting at all, the damnable deer are everywhere.
They aren't afraid of us either.
Golfing at any of the Cleveland Metro-parks courses will demonstrate what happens when the deer have no natural predators and simply don't fear humans at all.
They will stand in the fairways and not move an inch as you walk up to your ball.
The surrounding woods are void of vegetation on the ground and as high up the trees as they can reach.
It's great for finding your shanked balls, but shows that there are too many deer.

20,201 "reported" deer VS vehicle accidents in Ohio in 2013.
State Farm insurance says that 1 out of every 127 Ohio drivers will have an encounter with a deer this year.

Conservative estimates are that Ohio is now home to more than 750,000 deer.

I've lived in my house for 36 years and it wasn't until 10 years ago that deer started appearing across the street.
This Spring, I saw a doe with triplets.
Deer will usually throw twins in good times, so times must be REALLY good.
6-20 deer now congregate across the street and drift over into my yard and the neighborhood behind my house regularly.

There must be a major culling of Ohio's deer herd.

The bucks are rounding up their does at this time of year and if you see one cross the road, expect to see more following.

Deer rant over.
Bad around here to.
This year I had a deer cross in front of me while on the bike. I just about bent that front brake lever. I wasn't expecting the dear. And your right there was 2 more waiting for me to get closer.

Then while mowing my lawn I see this big image out the corner of my eye. Four deer walking through my front yard. I turned and headed for them and they didn't change direction at all. They had no fear of my noisey ride on mower.

If there going to fix it you better get them started now so it will be ready for next year...... You know how long it takes to get parts from Vic....

I'm still movin pretty slow. Even the good drugs don't much touch the pain and it'd be too hard to get up if I started chasing it with Captain Morgan, so I grin and bear it. Thanks for asking.

Insurance guy said pretty much everything was shot and it would likely be totalled. Mainly because even the frame itself was damaged I suspect. The agents at Progressive are great. I'll probably know within a day or two which way they decide to go.

Under the heading "when it rains it pours," when I got home my computer had gotten infected and I can no longer open Google Chrome. Virus seems to be gone though. Had to load up Firefox and do my best to configure it as I had Chrome. It is not nearly as nice a browser. In fact, none others are IMHO.

And then my oven's heating element got some spooge on it, caught fire, and burned it open. So between browser configuration, an oven part hunt, rounding up my accessory reciepts for the insurance, and just trying to use my legs with some regularity, I've stayed pretty busy.

If things slow down a little I may pen a bit about the Europe escapade. Until then, here's a little flavor of the Alps:

My wife stopped by the shop and got a few pics of the old girl today:

I thought the saying was "Gin and bear it"?

Sweet roads (Alps) and the tunes (LedZep) to go along with them.

I think you should get a Vision. LOL

They had a beautiful '13 in my favorite "red with stripes" color scheme that they just blew out for $18k and change.

They have a '14 XC that I'm considering. It too is priced right. I'm kinda thinking about a BMW RT too though.

Thanks for the post and the video S Bag. Keep yourself occupied and in as much motion as you can. And yes, your bike looks rough. I totaled a Moto Guzzi years ago. As soon as the insurance adjuster thought the frame was tweeked, that was all it took in Michigan at the time to total a motorcycle. I replaced that Moto Guzzi (V11 Bassa) with the exact same model but in a different color. I also took as much off the totaled bike as I could to use on the replacement.

Heal well and completely.

Heal up soon SB! Once they start the PT, keep it up as much as you can. It helps! I went down 5 1/2 months ago, spent a week in the hospital and another 2 weeks in a rehab facility. Open tib/fib fractures, fractured neck and back and 5 or 6 facial fractures. Titanium rod in my left leg and they didn't do anything with the fibula, it's still in 2 pieces and may never fuse. Anyway they had me up and walking (3 steps) the next day. 3 months later I went for the first ride on my new CCT. Little shaky, but getting better all the time. Keep working and walking as much as you can, it does get better! My last bike was totalled also. The pain also becomes less with time.

I'm not sure I'll be able to handle Harley touring weight for a while. Allowing myself to get distracted with the video console has less appeal now too. But I do think I could make a Dyna Low Rider into a pretty decent machine.

Step 1: Throw the Low Rider shocks in the garbage and buy a well made, aftermarket alternative that provides the bike proper clearance.

Step 2: Pipes, filter flash, should get the bike well over 80 hp which is plenty for me in a 600 lb machine.

Step 3: Replace the front rubber engine mount with one of these:
Front Engine Mount - Vibra-Technics Compliance Technology

It has two functions: a) Acts as a better vibration isolator
b) Add the front engine stabilization that the OEM neglected

Here's what idle looks like, once so equipped:

Step 4: Add a True Track rear engine stabilizer.

Step 5: Have some fun:

Sorry to hear about your accident SB. I've been so lucky to never have hit a deer while riding but have hit two in trucks. It happens so fast that there's not much you can do about it. Glad to hear your on the mend and already starting to think about your next bike.

Actually Rob, that was at about 35MPH! Bike clipped the back end of an SUV...while it was crossed up. I was already flying through the air and landed on my head. The bike shop stopped counting at 18K for repairs.

Seeing how bad some of these guys have been injured and came back swinging gives me a lot of hope.
Hey SB. My family thought I was crazy for looking at a new bike (except for my wife...she rides her own and has also gone down!) I was looking before I was out of the hospital and the XCT was the only bike that really pushed all the buttons for me...and the only one I could get up off the kickstand at that time. I was still using a walker when I bought it. No test ride, didn't even hear it running. Just went with the info that I found on here and from a few other friends. I was already looking before I was released.
I have a friend that broke his back several years ago in a bike wreck...same as me...slow speed. Anyway, he is in a wheelchair now. He would love to get back on a bike of his own, but will probably have to settle for a trike. Another friend smuggled him out of the hospital (4 or 5 months later) and took him for a ride on the back of his Goldwing! Never seen a bigger smile! He never got down and was always very upbeat and positive. He was some of my motivation and inspiration to push myself and get back on a bike.
Also, I don't know if I am the lucky one or not...I remember a couple of things from my wreck and the first day or so, but not much. Last thing I remember was saying...oh ****! LOL
Work hard at the rehab and you can come out at 100% or even better than before. If you are like me, still going to have aches and pains for a long time, but it does get better!
Good luck with fast healing and hope to meet you on the road sometime.
