Thanks guys for posting up all this good info. Cobra Rider a question for you. I see that you are back to the OEM spring and pressure plate. Are you running the Barnett fibers and steels? I am very curious on this topic now because after getting that newly built 100" on the road I've had my clutch slip 3 times on 5th gear passing maneuvers. I am pretty sure I have the green spring and I am hoping the synthetic oil my dyno guy put in is the culprit. I dropped that oil last night and am awaiting Rylan's loaner clutch tool. I am going to mic the plates to see if I wore them out... if they're still good, surface them and put them back... if they're worn out I'd value fresh input on Barnett vs OEM fibers & steels.

Yes, I am running the Barnett clutch pack (steels/fibers) with the OEM pressure plate. I haven't had the chance to get down to Ventura (where they are based from) to physically show them what's going on and get their recommended solution.
I personally want the Barnett pressure plate in it, at least the diaphragm, but so much going on right now hard to say when I'll get back to it. Got the bike all torn down for some custom paint work being done on it, brake pads, tires, fluids, getting ready for a looong trip this summer. About 8k miles worth of travel.

I will say that on all my previous bikes I never really had a problem with the OEM steels/fibers but typically the OEM pressure spring is weak. The Barnett steels do have a slight dimple pattern in them which helps in oiling and grabbing though.

Thanks Cobra Rider. I'm hoping I can stick to the green Vic spring... I split lanes where I can but get stuck in traffic on a somewhat regular basis and from what I hear, that Barnett spring is supposed to be a monster to pull in stop-n-go. Good luck with the paint and maintenance. If your trip takes you up to the bay area, give me a holler. I know some great roads up here.

You can purchase an EZ PULL that helps a ton but its tricky to adjust.

I mentioned the words EZ-pull to Rylan and he hates them... I used one for a while and would have to adjust it after 2-3 rides in heavy stop-n-go... so I have one if I need it but dang it was a high-maintenance part.

Nothing wrong with an EZ-pull unless you adjust them wrong. I've had mine for 40K miles. Clutch is still fine, running synthetic oil.

Yeah I've seen rumors of the potential for them to wear on clutches. I picked one up thinking it would help but I couldn't even come close to adjusting it in my situation. I altered it and made it a cover for that ugly cam gear.

The easy pull should never be used along with the stock spring...you'd be just asking for trouble, but with a super strong spring they work fine once you get it adjusted. The balance is trying to just barely eliminate the creep.

Thanks guys for the advice. I am ordering a Barnett spring tonight and unless the Vic fibers and steels are shot I will just de-glaze and re-use them... Cobra, I will let you know if I have any trouble with the pressure plate.

Cobra Rider, did you ever get your clutch sorted out? I put that Barnett pressure-plate and spring in (original fibers and steels de-glazed) and I'm having similar trouble as you: I can't get the clutch to disengage fully and right now I have it set to where it creeps like a mofo at lights but at least it idles... even so, there is no freeplay at the other end of the lever when I release it. If I adjust it to where it has freeplay at the lever, it creeps so bad that it can't idle.
Things I've checked:
1. judder washer in and judder spring in the right way
2. fiber's sharp edges facing steel sharp edges
3. clutch arm angle (same before as after)

Things I've not checked:
1. I didn't mic the OEM pressure plate vs the Barnett
2. I didn't de-burr the edges of the steels after I scuffed them... I wonder if they are hanging up on the clutch hub
3. I didn't soak the old (newly resurfaced) fibers in oil overnight prior to install, just squirted them down with oil as I stacked them in the basket...

I've called Rylan but got his voicemail... Thought I'd check in with the hive wisdom here :)

What I am running its the Barnett pack with OEM pressure plate and spring. I have not had a chance to get with Barnett mfg. Chance is the person I was told I need to talk to. Health issues have slowed me a little bit getting back on my feet lately.
I'm actuality glad I wasn't the only person to have this problem. I know it sucks but right now I'm in the middle of other things. Will be working to touch base next week to find a solution from Barnett.
I suggest you take same route for now and use OEM pressure plate and spring

Oh man! Get better from whatever ails you! It's funny, I actually called Barnett's today after finally talking to Rylan. Rylan suggested taking the pack back apart and making sure I did it right. When I called Barnett's I talked to Chance. His off-the-cuff suggestion was to take out the judder spring... I'm not sure I love that idea though. There doesn't seem to be any history on here or anywhere else of Vic clutches needing the judder spring out to run Barnett springs. Maybe we both got 2 of a batch of too-thick pressure plates. :banghead:

Cobra Rider,

I have a quick update for you. After 200 miles of dragging clutch and no way to adjust it out I tore into the bike last night and finally found a smoking gun: Poorly made diaphragm spring. (I was really glad I didn't find any fault in my clutch-packing job). 1st picture is my pressure plate looking remarkably like yours with a worn spot by my finger fading off into untouched orange by the the other side of the plate... the next is a simple demo photo showing without tools what I verified measuring 3 different ways: this new spring is warped. A couple of the fingers stand taller than the rest which was cocking the pressure plate to one side when the lever was pulled in.... Also, the Barnett fingers barely contact the seat-ring where the Vic spring makes full positive contact. The Vic spring fingers are almost 1/16th of an inch longer than the Barnett's (last photo, Vic spring underneath the Barnett spring). Eureka! Parts are in the mail back to Chance at Barnett's.

That would explain the chatter, but dont know that it will get you into any resemblance of being able to adjust it.
Spoke with an expert yesterday and he said that Barnett quality standards are lacking. He orders all his Barnett stuff from Lloydz because they measure them out to ensure they are accurate. I ordered from Barnett because it was a bit cheaper. Guess that wasn't the smartest move in this case

Good info for next time :) FYI, I never had chatter, just a clutch that dragged/creeped really badly and had a super-wide friction-zone when I had the bad spring in.... but I could see how the same defect could cause both symptoms.

My chatter happened with I slowed like pulling into a parking lot and shifted into 1st gear to keep moving. Otherwise it was pure drag with no adjustment room.

When you do get the new items let me know how it turns out. Really want mine fixed.

Got my new clutch spring kit last night. Prompt service from Barnett's. Upon initial inspection all looks good... it mic'ed out much more uniform than the previous spring. I'll put it in this weekend and throw an update on here once she's rolling....

Also, in the interim I built my own clutch tool... not as pretty as others I've seen but it's functional and I was able to get Rylan's loaner tool back to him.

Thanks. I have a clutch tool that I have used on other bikes. Had to modify bolt a little but works just fine.
Let me know how this goes. I'm feeling much better. Doing fork oil change right now but want to get into that as soon as possible. Need to dig up paperwork and give them a shout.
