The Honda Goldwing drain bolt washers are the same size as the Vic copper ones but will never leak. Twice when the bike was in for some servicing and I decided to be lazy and have them do the oil change, they used the copper washers and I found oil on the floor under the bike. Had to snug it up even more. Not good. Honda good - Vic bad.
 
I suspect that the PO cross threaded the gearbox threads, and being softer than the steel drain plug, they got torn up. When you use the time sert, I believe it comes with a tap with a series of reamer flutes on it that enlarge the hole? I‘ve never used one but done a lot of thread inserts. If your tap has the reamer flutes on it, coat them with a little grease so that any shavings stick to the grease and don’t float around in the sump.

I would recommend laying the bike over on its side, so you can get square on to the drain. You don’t want to get the tap started cross threaded, or you will fix the problem but have an oil leak at the fitting as it’s not gone in square. Take your time and do it right and you will be just fine. Also, I wonder, if the drain plug is stock? It almost sounds like it might be too long? Just a thought.

I had the same issue with my 08 Vision 2 yrs after it was new. Installed the timesert and have had no issues ever since! Now at about 75,000 miles!
 
If you don't know what you're doing, have a trusted bike shop do it. Nothing like wrecking it beyond the capability of fixing it. I use an aluminum Goldwing drain washer. Same size as the copper one and doesn't need to be cranked down to ensure no leaks. I speak from experience.

Have the timesert installed. Put the bike up on a jack and really took my time. Did everything manually, no drills just so I could work slowly and not get pressured into rushing. Kept every bit covered with grease to keep the shaving out and ran a qtip with grease on it in between so did everything I could to keep shaving out of the case. Added oil and ran the bike, no issues so am feeling pretty good about the whole effort right now.

Rylan put a Timesert in the Bride's CR when we first got it. Has not been an issue with it in 30k miles. 6+ oil changes...

Seems stripped drain plugs come from over tightening & from not gettin the hex fully inside the drain plugs hole. So how cleans ur hole, not that hole, ur drain plugs tool hole

I pick the drain plug out of the used oil container, wipe it off with a rag then I use a Q-Tip to wipe out the hex head recess. That process has worked fine for me for several decades.
 
Just for grins after changing my oil I took a torque wrench to see how much torque I put on my drain plug with my magic elbow. Was right at 11 Ft. Lbs.
Never stripped a drain plug, never had one leak or come loose.
yea my magic elbow is good as well LoL
