Shelter in Place bike projects

*** I hope this thread will stick to projects and not politics or why we're in the situation we're in. There are other threads for that ***

Well now that Illinois has joined other states as "shelter in home" I started thinking of bike projects I've been meaning to get to or have put off until 2021. I have at least two.

Last year one of my saddlebags leather split on my '04 Kingpin. To get them recovered would cost about as much as buying a new set of bags and I'm just not ready to drop that kind of cash. So, in January I pulled the leather off myself and found they might be okay if I cleaned them up and tried some spray paint. We'll see how it goes. I'm working on that today. Fortunately I can heat my garage with a torpedo heater.

The second one will take a bit more time. After reading a past thread about swing arm bearings I picked up what I needed but decided to hold off when we started to get breaks in the weather. In January I did the head bearings, fork oil & seals, took out the throttle body adapter but it actually looked good, so I just cleaned the body well, added Denali D2 lights on the forks, and swapped out my cr@ppy OEM 16 year old high bean bulb with an Cyron Elite LED. After all that I thought that was enough but it looks like I'll have a little more time on my hands at home.

What I will probably get to after the saddlebags is polish up my wheels well. They look 16 years old. But if I take my rear wheel off do I just dive in and get the bearings ...

:twist1:

Anyone else got plans?

Redid my home made wind wings using heavier polycarbonate (3/16")
Much stiffer now.
Also, the Ness logo on my Right Cheese wedge was starting to wear off.
I pulled both sides and stripped the insert and wrapped it with 3M Carbon fiber film then added a new Ness Logo.
Looks much better!

Well I broke my shoulder and my wrist about two months ago so unfortunately I've been sheltering in place early LOL. This is the first winter I've owned my cross country and I put saddlebag speakers in, 21 in Magnum front wheel, matching Magnum rear wheel, full audio upgrade front and rear including pioneer stereo and a hydraulic clutch kit. Plus a bunch of accessories like the lights and the sabre tail lights. as soon as I can move correctly I'll be finishing it all up in the next month or two

I replaced my rear shock on my 2011 XC. I bought a used OEM one from one of the Airride Dealers for $100 and did all the work myself. I used the manual, Youtube videos and only had to phone a friend once. Thanks @jdr_socal !

It's a great time to ride. On my 45 mile commute to work my average mph is up by 15mph. Ive put 5500 miles (winter ha) on the vision since 12/18.

If they start closing gas stations I'll take gas with me just in case.

We still have work at the shop but it's slow and parts may start to dry up with manufacturing closing down.

I have some 2" pullback bars that have been hanging around since 4/17. Maybe I'll put them on one day soon? Think I'll send @NOEMTZ a text about getting some parts and a couple remote tunes.

I found a smoking deal on a KpT trunk for $100 add another $50 for passenger floorboards, a Victory windscreen, a 100ci stk exhaust and some mirrors and it kept me bzy for 2 days...
Image

i had to make a connector piece for trunk support to bag hanger...

so here is a tip I use when making a template : go to the dollar store and get a see-thru cutting matt - makes making the template effortless almost and transferring the mounting bolts ez :)

...now I have built a Cross Kp tour the cheap bastard way LOL

...excuse my cluttered bike space plz...

Got the cams in and new aluminum Intake. Took the forks off to send to Scott at conquest customs. Just need to wire the sound system and put it back together when the forks get back. New magnum wheels and Avon rubber going on too.

It was an Arts and Crafts since my Pin was down with the fuel pump (replaced it).

My wife has a Cricut machine that you can create some pretty cool stuff. In a past life I was a graphic artist so I was able to figure this out pretty quick but anyways I found the old style Victory logo online, modified it a bit, and added my bike to it. Ended up with a sticker for the rear window of the car.

Here's the design:

And the cut vinyl ...

And the final result on the car.

Put the trunk back on today. Prepping for some stereo upgrades. Already bought the amp and upgraded speakers in the trunk, now just need to get the fronts and hook it all up.

Welp, project one is "done". The saddlebags are painted and put back together.

If you stand the designated 6 feet away they look decent. Get too close and they look like someone roughed them up and spray painted them.

They'll be functional for now until I can replace them.

have you thought about some spray on truck bed liner? Might just give it a good look.

Great idea for a thread!
I’m waiting for word on my taxes. That will determine how much I can afford to do while social distancing. I did order another fire stick for the downstairs TV.
Does that count?

So here are the bags painted with an overcoat of undercoat (thanks for the idea @kaitiff ) and a few light coats of clear. I still know they're going to scratch easy but for the moment they look good (enough) for $8 of paint. It's a stop-gap.

Found a pair of almost new Witchdoctors baffled Muscle Mufflers on FleaBay for a great price.
Installed them Monday. the sound is perfect for me. Not too loud but nice rumble and bark at WOT, almost as quiet as OEM at Cruise. I'm very pleased with these! Sounds like a V-Twin now ..LOL! Wasn't too bad a job. Left side gave me a bit of grief to remove but a 10lb dead blow and PB blaster took care of it!
My old OEM mufflers are getting trashed. they are so rusty it's not worth trying to flip them.

I kinda like the stock bags on the Kingpin, other than how small they are inside. I think they look really good on the bike, and I really like the faux leather cover on mine, although I've managed to get a tear on both the trunk and the right saddlebag (drunk chick sitting on the bike.. don't ask). That being said, I think the idea o the bed liner sprayed on might be a good one, aside from the possible issue with it chipping or cracking. If you do decide to do that make sure to post up here!

I was quoted about $500 for getting them recovered but the lady that would've done the work moved to Arizona. She did most custom leather work for Woodstock Harley and I'm sure the quality she put into it would have been worth the money. I've seen some of her work and it's awesome. I may have to send my bags to her over next winter.

But for now a $15 investment is worth a try as well and yeah I am concerned of wear. If it gets me through the year I'll be happy. I'm going to start spraying tonight once I get my garage warmed up enough. I'm also thinking the undercoat spray will take away from some other blemishes.

Added all the chrome that i scoured the internet for, horse collar, top fairing piece, side covers, front tip overs, rear piece, and the vision "swoosh"

Front fender support bracket(from the factory recall)

While I had all the front panels off decided to fix the oval Victory emblem lights, now both light up like they were supposed to, got the idea from another member on here to drop in led lights and spliced the wires back into the original connectors.

New battery
New spark plugs & wires

plan on an oil change and add the new reusable oil filer, had on on my XCT and really like it.

Yeah that is. I watched that video along with a bunch of DYI videos sometime last year. I've been planning on painting or wrapping my Pin down the road. Not sure I can paint like that though. That is talent.

I've been thinking of picking up a damaged tank to play with. One of these days maybe ... my wife has my dance card filled up with other stuff. Two bathrooms to remodel to start with. :woot:

I travel for work, mostly by air but lately considering going by land as much as possible. Less available flights, stupid prices, other issues, car rentals and hotels, etc. etc. So thinking that I could maybe build an over-pillion luggage rack for my toolbox, it's usually weighing in between 50-70 lbs and it's a bit on the large side. Med size pelican case. Not sure where to start but guess I'll trace out the lock-n-ride backrest/rack for a starting point for mounting. Think I might add a front cage to it and attach a backrest to kill 2 birds with one stone, keep it from sliding forward if I brake hard and also for comfort. I'd like to keep the center of gravity close to the center, not really concerned with how it looks. Anyway, something I've actually been thinking about for 5 years so might as well get on it.

Damn. 50-70 pounds is a lot of weight but if you're traveling on the bike whatever you're taking would be worth it.

I traveled 400 miles round trip each week for almost 10 years. Stayed in the same crappy hotel too. I rode as much as possible and learned the hard way there is stuff you simply have to carry when you ride just like you do when you drive.

The Pin doesn't have the capacity to carry as much weight specifically for tools but I made do with what I could. Save Ur Ride, tire patch and inflator, and some wrenches wa the best I could do with stuff to stay the week.

Love to see the pix of what you come up with.
