Madstad, brackets installed today

Installed my madstad brackets today. They definitely turn the dirty air into clean air. I think I need to ditch my klock werks shield though and get their 11". I was planning on putting on my kewlmetal winglets which I've had forever but didn't want to drill holes. I'm going to go through with it. Does anyone know what size drill bit to use?

Iceman - I put mine on today as well and got an hour ride in before dinner and the rain. What a difference. I'm using my 13" Cee Baileys and get zero head buffetting. I went through four windshields and finally found the madstad system.
If you are reading this thread wondering if you should get the madstad system, just do it. Don't waste your money or time trying to find the right windshield when this system really works. I'm thrilled.
Unlike others, I don't mind the wind coming up from the forged crash bars. The Bakers Air Wings might be my next investment just to calm things down a little or help deflect wind on a cold or rainy ride home.
Good luck with the kewlmetal winglets. Let us know how things turn out!

Thanks. I'm thrilled about the madstad brackets. I'm going to order one of their 11" shields on Monday. Any suggestions on tint? I like the idea of dark, but probably medium dark would be a safer choice.
I think their shields are wider too. That will take care of a lot of wind! My cee baileys is clear. I want to be able to see through it at all times. I know the grey looks cool, but I gotta see! Be safe. Again, keep us posted on your winglets...

I've been putting off going to the winglets for the same reason. Those screws make it look like a shoemaker fix. While I was riding today a thought crossed my mind regarding their installation. Has anyone ever mounted these to the leading edge of the bar rather than the back side? It wouldputthemdirectly in the air stream but hidden from view. I may have to make a set and try it out.
I also run the Klock werks flip, is it not compatible with the brackets or are you just looking for a taller shield?

Color me confused. I am all for alternate solutions and Madstad is a good company with a good product but if their bracket solution is suppose to be SO good, why would you need a different shield or the Kewlmetal windlets? I've seen others report that just putting on the JTD lowers solves buffeting issues. You can leave your werks windscreen or Cee Baileys windscreen in place and reportedly have no buffeting so wouldn't those be a better solution?

I'm going to order the brackets this week but i think I want to try them on my stock shield first. Do you think I'm wasting my time trying them with the stock shield? I'm so confused....UGH my bike is two weeks old and I cant go over 70Km ( from Canada) I called Madstad today but they are closed untill Monday.

If you are going to order the madstad system, I would try the original shield before spending any more money - I went through four shields before getting the madstad. Depending on your height, it might just work for you. I'm 6'2" ish and am using the 13" cee baileys. I'm thinking about trying the original shield just to see if it will work for me too. With the madstad system, there is a lot of room to move the original shield up... I ordered mine on Monday night and had it by Friday. From my experience, they have great customer service. Very helpful. Call them Monday and order it!

Ironman, the klock werks is compatible but when I raise the shield to its highest position the flip part causes distortion right onmy field of vision. Plus I think the flip part causes a bit of buffeting with this shield. Director, the stock shield works fine with the system but the new 11" shield they designed has a nicer look along the bottom edge since it will be exposed whith this system. Plus it's a bit wider. There is a thread just below this one titles "madstad adjustable xc shield review". Read through it especially page 6. There are a lot of pictures of their shield.

I'm in the same boat as you Director19. I'm about 5'8" and was wondering if the stock shield would work and I think it will. The shield I beileve they would recommend for a shorter rider is the 11" and the aftermarket 11" seems to be close in dimensions to the stock windsheild.

Director19, shoerhino, from what I've learned on another thread, the stock shield should work fine but I think their 11" shield is a little wider and will do better at keeping the wind off your arms. I would try the stock shield myself but the dealer sold me the bike with the klock werks on it and never gave me the original shield. So I'm going to order the madstad 11" shield tomorrow. I've been told on another thread that it matches the look of the fairing better and that the material is much thicker/sturdier. But this is all stuff I've read and not actually saw for myself. I'll keep you posted when my shield comes in.

I didn't do anything about it. It is so small that it really is not noticeable.

You hardly notice it. I peeled off the little edge protector strips too since they're no longer needed. It cleans up the top edge of the outer fairing nicely. If you're really tall, you might be able to see into the gap while riding, but everything in there is blackso it is not really a big deal. Would probably look worse if you tried to fill the gap.

As for the OEM vs. 11" MadStad shield. I've ridden witheach of themfor a few months now. Height / wind protection is nearly identical, the MadStad shield just looks nicer as it wasn't designed to be tucked into the gap. One difference I did notice though... Iwas ableto ride with the OEM adjusted all the way down and all the way forward and it was fine. Due to the MadStad matching the lines of the fairing so well, if you adjust it all the way down and all the way forward, the air gap between the shield and the outer fairing becomes very small, maybe about 1/8-1/4". At speeds over about 70mph or so it did not seem to be letting enough air in behind the shield which was causing some turbulence. I think the jagged bottom edge of the OEM shield was allowing for more airflow so this was not an issue. There's not really a reason to ride with it in that position, but I thought it was worth mentioning in case someone was having buffeting issues with it set like that.

I did buy and install the madstad brackets last week for use with the OEM windshield. At 5'8", I can say that I'm happy with the oem windsheild's coverage. I already have a pretty large windhsield for spring and fall riding so I wanted something that would give me more air but eliminate the turbulance and I was suprised at how well the combination worked together.
The only challenge I had was that one of the brackets had a little bit of metal in one of the cut outs which caused one of the brackets to not slide past the halfway point. I sanded the metal down in the cut out and that solved the problem.
Overall, very satisified with the purchase.

So , I just did about 300 miles on my XC with the stock windshield and am very curious about the madstad brackets. I am right at 6'1". Should I look at getting the taller shield to go with the brackets or would the stock shield work fine for my height? I understand there is a good amount of adjustments that you can make, but would rather just buy a set if I have to and do it all at once versus getting the brackets installed then realizing I should have gotten a bigger shield too. Help would be very much appreciated!
Thanks

I'm about 6'2" and am using a 13" cee baileys. With all the adjustments, An 11" would probably work. I haven't had time to try oem shield - too much rain... I would call madstad Monday or send support an email - they'll be honest with you!

Powerj2001, since you already have the stock 11" shield it will work fine with the brackets. The 11" madstad makes is about the same size only looks a little nicer. I'm 6' with the 11" shield. But maybe get the 13" shield that way you will have your stock shield for the summer and the 13" for the winter. But if you only want to mess with one shield I think the 11" is just fine.
