So I would like some practical advice on how to best remove the bezel with common tools, instead of the mystical "plastic" tool described in the instructions for installing a GPS mount.

I know a screwdriver will scratch and likely mar the plastic, so what have any of you used to accomplish this feat?

Ah...you brought up plastic and that's exacly what I have. One of my local auto-parts store had some of those plastic wedge thingies they use in body work. Works great because apparently my little fingers are just too weak to grab the edge of the bezel like that guy on youtube.

Found a rubber wedge used for bondo work, worked like a charm.

Thx!

After inspecting mine for any gaps, I used a left over used car wiper blade refill metal spine. It's about 22" long x .09" wide x .03" thick and I bent the last 1/16", or less, 90-degrees to a sharp corner. Looped the other end to fit my hand. The temper is hard, but just soft enough to put a bend in it. There was just enough gap to slide the bent end under the bezel at each of the four locations. The metal is stiff enough that the bend didn't relax back to straight. I had considered putting protective tape on the adjacent body panels, but there was enough gap that it wasn't necessary.
