I would go with the 522's, better frequency response , can hit the low notes a little better

The DB651 is clearly a coaxial speaker (i have a set in my garage), but the MM651 has a separate crossover network which led me to believe the tweeter may be as well. However after looking and more images online MM651 is also a coaxial. bummer

Yeah, I think all of the MM speakers have a separate crossover box. I have a pair of 6x9s around here somewhere and they are like that.

I have a pair of DB6501s in my fairing right now and I really like them. Very good audio quality and they do have the benefits you describe since there is no post for the tweeter.

I had read some people had issues with the tweeters coming detached on the MM polks so that kind of took them out.

I've already placed my order for the DB-521 polks so we will see how they do. I may add an amp eventually but saving for bars and a couple other things like the 21 up front over the winter and some other performance things too.
I ran these same speakers for over 2 yrs. no issues. I removed them because of wrong info. Hertz disappointed with detached woofers. Both! Less than a year.
I put back in the polks. They rock hard.

it was explained to me by a tech at Crutchfield and shown on a Polk description sheet that a 4 ohm source is compatible. I set my gain a little lower and HP on the amp. No clipping no excessive heat. Good speakers.
All though this is not my amp of choice and many discredit it. I have been using it for over 4 yrs. it's still working well.
Next choice will either be
The RF 400 or the new Soundstream ST41000DB with blue tooth

Rock on boys

Number one question about these speaker on the Polk website is about the impedance and their own support staff warns of using these only with sources that can handle the lower impedance. The PBR300x4 is only rated down to 4 ohms.
Will it work? most likely, is it a risk you want to take? your call.

One thing the I really like about these speakers, and hope the SlickVic can confirm or correct, is that they appear to have a separate tweeter that can mount to the grill or elsewhere. This would mean there is no hole through the woofer to allow water behind the speaker and should also improve bass response.

If your source is capable of loads down to 2 ohms, I would certainly consider these.

This is Polks own statement. (All factory and aftermarket systems)
Sorry it posted twice.
Please tell me what this means. I will tell you I believe it to be accurate as I am experiencing how these speakers are performing. A great choice. And well made.

That comment is from Crutchfield. I have searched the polk site and all I can find is what I posted. Again, it may work. I may use them myself, but my amp is rated for 2ohms stereo and 4ohms bridged. I just wouldn't suggest it to others use them unless their amp is designed for the lower impedance. Just consider Ohms Law before choosing to use low impedance speakers on a source not designed to handle it.

On a side note, if you look at the images for the hawg amps the distortion goes up by a multiple of 1,000 when you go from 4ohm stereo to 4ohm bridge (comparable to 2ohm stereo). Most amps will have similar results.

Doing a google search "Important note: These polk speakers use a low" I found two from Crutchfield and the one for the 6x9 includes the word "Virtually" but either way, the comment is from Crutchfield. Polk warns using them unless the amp manufacturer recommends it.

Fair enough. I now realize it was a Crutchfield statement.
As professional and reliable as a company like Crutch-field is I have to think the techs are confident in what they state. They pointed me to the statement on line. He did spend the time with me on the phone explaining Polks efficient design. The amp at 4 ohms will produce alittle more than 75 watts to the 2.7 ohm speaker. Approx 100 ?
Don't know what that will do to the amp or the speaker but with my gain set fairly low (4) and never really driving a hard bass. I'm confident I can get the performance out of these
Polk also actually makes a 3 ohm speaker as well.
We'll see how it works. So far I'm liking it.

Haha. Down here in Florida no one has there windows down anyway.

I received the Polk DB521's today and got them in. First I will say they went in a lot easier than the factory came out and I made a 6" wire harness/adapter so I didn't have to cut, splice, and solder the factory wiring.

Now onto the speakers. I'm happy with my purchase. They are clear and clean sounding with a little more bass. Haven't been able to ride with them in yet because I am currently waiting on my windshield to show up.

How are the db 521's working out. I see you made a adapter is the connection different from stock? Anything special I should know about wiring. Is there a crossover?
