When my wife & I traveled on our past bikes, 99 Roadking & 05 Nomad, I worried about overloading but everything always seemed to be OK. On these bikes I used an expandable Saddleman bag which weighed maybe 60# loaded on the rear luggage rack off the sissy bar, and both saddlebags were loaded too.
Now I'm planning my 1st trip on our 2011 XC with trunk. I'm 275# , I'll say my wife is 200# (I'm afraid to ask her for specifics), plus gear for 10 days. The Trunk won't hold as much as the Saddleman Bag so I'll be putting another bag up on the rack. That gear will still probably equal the 60# used in the Saddleman. So that's 475# of humans, 100# in all 4 bags, plus helmets, jackets, etc.
Seriously I think we'll be close to 600#. With a 560# useful load...That exceeds GVWR.
So I could get take off the trunk and get a backrest and rack which would cut maybe 50# off the top.
Any advice would be appreciated.
