My cruise control has stopped working. I have a '12 Cross Country (17k mi.). I noticed after washing it, it would take an hour or so of riding before the cruise control would come on (wind dried I suspect). It got progressively worse over time. Now it does not come on at all. The ON switch blinks green briefly but won't stay lit. Setting it doesn't work. It doesn't catch. This morning I took the switch apart to see if I could find the cause. It appeared clean. No sign of water in the switch. I know that the absence of obvious water damage doesn't mean there is no water damage. What I don't know is whether the switch is in fact dead, or whether the problem lies elsewhere. Anybody out there have a similar issue or heard of this? Any information you have will be greatly appreciated.

Try disconnecting the cruise wire unerneath the right side of the gas tank and see if it will work then. search the forum here for the thread.

Look under the right side of the gas tank. It is only and inch or so from the front. 2 single prong connections, on mine anyway, unplug them both. This will disable the ability to roll off the throttle to turn off the cruise.
There are some connections under the fairing that may very well be wet, and should be moved to a high and dryer spot.
Not the best design, huh?
Good luck

My cruise went in-op and it ended up being the rear brake light switch . When the switch went , it stuck in the on position . I disconnected one of the wires from the switch and the cruise started working again . FYI rear brake switch is on the shifter side under & a little behind the battery .

Desert_CC,

Might check your throttle cable adjustment. If it becomes too loose... No cruise. Too tight... No cruise.
My 2010 cruise stopped working because of that many times.
Also, because of water/moisture in the safety line switch (along the right side frame under the gas tank).
Also, I had to replace my actually handlebar switches at one point. They looked good inside.. Just failed.
Also, if you have the HID light. The hi beam can interfer with being able to engage the cruise. Might have to move the ballast and igniter away from the cruise wires inside the fairing (had to do that before also).
The cruise is awesome. But can be finicky.

I tried tightening the throttle cables ( at the handlebar adjusters) because there appeared to be slack where they attached (right side under gas tank). That did not make the cruise start working. I think next I'm going to try disconnecting the brake switch and throttle Sensor one at a time. It's frustrating not knowing much about maintaining them. I can wash it, change the oil, air filter, but beyond that I'm not very proficient. I wouldn't mind dropping it off at a dealer to be fixed but I worry about their experience (or lack of) with this issue and then the ensuing bill. Any ideas about how much this issue can cost to fix?

If it is important to you to have it working (it was/is for me on my now 2014). It's worth getting it dialed in by your dealer. Cant speak for your dealer. Though, mine has always been very straight forward and honest. It's worth it working and not being aggravated.

OK, a shot in the dark, but pull the right side cover. A fuse box is under it. The only 20A fuse in there (yellow) is the one that has to work for the cruise. Check it. Not sure what all it operates but it is labeled body control or the like.
Easy to check and something you need to be ware of.

Throttle roll off switch was my problem. Unplugged it and the cruise works great, you just cant turn the cruise off by rolling the throttle forward now.
My dealer said it was not an uncommon problem.
Where is the throttle roll off switch at? Today out of the blue I checked to see the cruise worked and it did for about 8 seconds then cut out.

Two wire connectors on the throttle cable just under the right side of the tank (look from front). Unplug one of them and the cruise will likely work. The connectors are sketchy so water, dirt or seemingly wind makes the cruise not engage.

Thank you. I disconnected the wires from that connector, taped them together. Went for a ride and the cruise control began working without cutting out. Thanks again.

For others out there that experience the cruise control either cutting out, or not working at all, I disconnected the red wire and the white/red wire that connect to the top of the throttle cable (front right side of the gas tank). This fixed the problem. The cruise control works now, just no throttle roll off to disengage the cruise. I have to brake or turn off the switch. I was told that disconnecting one of the wires is sufficient. I didn't remember that bit of information while doing the procedure so I disconnected both. Thank you to all who helped me fix this. I hope this can help out another. I'm pretty sure this is going to happen on many of these bikes with this switch configuration (my guess is water got in this connector)

Good that you found a fix, sucks that you had to find a fix.

I wonder if you could put a piece of shrink wrap tubing over the wires, hook them back up, cover the connection with the shrink wrap and then shrink it for a good seal and to prevent the crud from getting in there?

I have not looked at mine so maybe that's not an option. Just spit-balling.

In the pictures below you'll see the Throttle rolloff switch. Two wires turn downward to connect to the throttle cable. If you have issues with your cruise control cutting off or not working at all, this is a good place to start. With a flat head screwdriver pry one of the wires up and off of the switch. After doing this, my cruise worked. The location of this switch (as you're sitting on the bike, front right side of the gas tank) means it gets wet during washing easily.

It's too bad that it took you a week to find what the very first, second and third responses to your question suggested.
To be constructive, I'll add that the FSM has the directions for the built-in diagnostic procedure; your bike's cruise system is designed to tell you what its problem is-- you just have to know how to ask.
Hopefully, too, your photos will help someone else figure out what Red_Bagger, Gamewarden, Lostintexas and RoadWarrior09 were telling you within a day of asking...
