Bigger dust cover blunder

I should have asked before doing. I pulled the cover out of the top hole on the rear caliper
problem is that the 2 ribbed ends tore off. I trimmed it and left some of the edge so that it
would stay in place. Seems to be just fine. Question is since it only covers a square looking
shaft with a nut on the end and nothing to do with any fluids is it important to cover the
whole thing? Over time it may get dirty and rusted. I don't want to sound cheap but I
could get a new one and replace it when I get a new rear tire but I would have to buy a kit for $30.00
that has one in it.
I have a 2005 Kingpin Deluxe
I would appreciate any comments and advice.
