Hi all,

I downloaded a 2010 service manual as I was looking to see what was involved in fork removal so I can get the fluid and likely seals changed.

I guess I am looking for some reassurance that I can do this myself. I am fairly good with tools and my vehicle but I haven't done much with the bike. Am I correct that it looks like only 5 or 6 bolts need to be loosened, and the calipers removed for the forks to slide out?

I plan to take the forks somewhere to have them complete the service but if I can save labour and remove myself I will.

Can I do this myself or should I let the garage do it?

Thanks!

I would say go for it, Follow the steps in the manual and you can't go wrong. You will need to ensure you have a decent lift that holds the bike steady while you are removing the forks and afterwards.I would crack the fork yoke bolts, caliper mounting bolts and loosen the front wheel before lifting the bike off the ground myself. There is not a lot to it, as you said there are not many bolts to undo, remove and secure the calipers. If you can remove your front wheel yourself you will have no trouble removing the forks. Good luck, keep us posted.

@evansrj it's not difficult at all.

Start with the bike on the ground or secured on a lift.
1 loosen the lower axle pinch bolts.
2 loosen the axle
3 loosen the caliper bolts
4 jack the bike up, STRAP IT DOWN
5 remove and hang the calipers
6 remove the front wheel
7 remove the fender
8 turn the bars to the left, loosen the triple tree pinch bolts for the right fork and remove
9 turn the bars to the right...remove left fork

Taking your time with hand tools you might be 45-60 minutes in being it's your 1st time.

Piece of cake.

1.removed front wheel, brake calipers, and fender.
2.take handle bars off and lay them on a towel across tank.
3. This is the time to 'loosen' the top nut of the fork while it's still clamped in the triple tree.
4.loosen triple clamps with an Allen wrench from above and a long extension socket from below.
5. slide one fork out.
repeat step 4 for other side.

You have to remove the console to R&I the handlebars. Unnecessary work IMHO

If you are going to go through the trouble to remove the tubes yourself, you can and should rebuild yourself. It's that easy. You'll need a couple special tools. Harbor freight has them.
