On my work commutes I have been feeling something weird. When going around a slow turn mostly from starting off my back tire feels like it wants to slip out. I have Avon Cobras on the bike. Looking at the tire I can see that the majority of road contact is on the middle of the tire and is maybe 2 1/2 inches wide. I run the recommended 42psi cold. The rest of the tire that isn't part of the contact looks like it just came off the shelf. The little left over rubber from molding the tire is still on the edges of the tire. Am I running to much air pressure over rounding the tire not allowing enough of the tread to contact the road surface? The tires have probably got around 500 to 1k miles on them. Thoughts?

I"ve always been of the camp that the 'max' rating on a tire is just that.. MAX. If you aren't loading the bike to it's maximum load capacity, you shouldn't be riding it at max air pressure. Try dropping a few pounds pressure and take it for a ride.. it won't kill you I promise! It sounds like you're experiencing the jacking effect you get when you try to lean a square tire, always felt to me like the rear end was sliding away as it gets up onto that squared edge. If the tire is already squared off it might not help a lot.. but when you do go to replace maybe try a little less pressure and see if you like it. This is my opinion and is expressed as such. Tire warrior threads can be almost as bad as oil threads..

The highest recommended pressure I found for your rear is 41 psi and front. Does the placard on your bike reflect this chart (I'm assuming an '06 Vegas here). Also, the Avon Cobra doesn't have an exact replacement for your original tire. You could just be looking at a design difference, in which case, you may also need to find a better pressure to run at.

Thank you for the replies. Will try a bit less pressure.

I run 40 in the rear and 38 in the front as per the riders manual for the CCT states...... I fluctuate between 101 to 103 kg in weight and I do not adjust anything for that, I think the rear shock is set at 24lbs/square inch.....

We are riding two different style of bikes though and I do have the original OEM tyres.....

I have never touched the shock and don't know what the previous owner has it set to. I need to get a spanner wrench and set my sag.

@CaliPhil Don't worry, I have the same feeling on my Gunner. In turns I feel it either hop or slide, not sure about my shock setting and I don't have a spanner yet. I really only ever feel the rear give any type of movement, sometimes on straight roads.

Maybe to remedy this problem, we should ride down the road swerving like the sport bikes always do in low speed areas!

LOL. I think it is that I am getting up on the edge of the tire. It only happens on slow hard turns. Never felt it on the road at speed.

That's odd. Maybe you picked up a bad habit? Mine is downshifting right before a turn, way too much torque.

Avons have a bunch of rubber on them. You are running max pressure on a light bike and with the low amount of miles they are most likely still soft and the rubber moving around. They need a few more heat cycles on them. also too much pressure is as bad as too little. the tire is part of the suspension, it needs to flex.

It's Avons. When you first put them on you love them. The more they wear the worse they get. When they're about 3/4 gone they feel downright scary. JMHO/YMMV
Avon if you break them in right they work very well and are very predictable down to the wear bars. you can over heat them pretty easily on our bikes and just trash them in a few thousand miles.

I thought it was just me. It happens on a couple of turns on my way home from work. Fairly tight turns, in low speed, and the rear end feels like it's sliding out. Only about 3500 miles on the bike. I'm gonna check the pressure in the shock. I keep tires at 41 in rear, and close to 40 in front.
I used Avon Cobras on my last bike, and they were fantastic, all the way until they were down to the wear bars, albeit a little cupped up front.

Squatch, you say a light bike. Do you think less pressure in the tire would be better? Just bought a good Air guage and it's at 41.5 psi. That is warm.

Reminds me of the effect experienced by riding on car tires. Flat surface always wanting to upright the bike.
