Saddle Bag Quick Release

The quick release on my RH saddle bag worked great today on the freeway. Worked so well I didn't even hear the bag come off. Didn't know anything until I exited and a guy told me it fell off and immediately got smashed by a truck. Went back to try and find what was inside, unfortunately my iPad was destroyed along with the bag. I read an earlier post about Victory not really stepping up on this matter but didn't know if anyone had any new info regarding this being covered under warrenty. I've got almost 5000 miles on the bike with no issues. Noticed one of the quick releases was loose a couple of weeks ago and have been checking them everytime I ride. Before I left today, they were all attached. I'm lucky that I didn't cause a serious accident on the freeway. Hopefully it didn't damage the other guys truck too bad. If anyone has any info about what Vic or the dealer may do, please let me know. Guess the fairing I wanted to buy will have to wait cause now I gotta buy a new set of bags and a more permanent attachment system.

Sorry to hear this. I put bolts in mine. Best $10 I have spent on the bike. It takes a couple of minutes instead of a couple of seconds to remove the bags, but there isn't a chance of the quick release doing just this. IMHO they work a bit too well.
Best wishes

Sorry this happened. I had the same issue with finding them loose so I replaced them with the Brukus fasteners. Seems to me that the wire on that spring clip can bend preventing the fastener from pulling tight resulting in it coming loose.

I had the same issue. Ma Vic replaced mine but it was within two months of my purchase. If you're within your warranty you'll need your dealer to advocate for you but they have and do replace them. I changed my quick release for a bolt that a Vogger did a video on. Lowes for less than $10. Witchdoctor sells a similar kit but has the addition of security bolts. Not only won't your bags come loose, but nobody can steal them, either. A very good deal for well under $40.

i am going to take a look and see if i can figure out how to replace just one of the two releases on each side with just a nut nad lock washer and bolt just to give a little extra protection and i believe this can be done for less than 4 bucks . Possibly will try to find a bolt with a cotter key hole in the end where it wont be able to loosen up to the point of falling out. i carry way too much stuff in my bags to have to worry about this. also i would think your comp insurance would cover the loss if t is enough to make it worth the claim. i carry a gun, three cameras and a laptop in one bag and at times my cell and ipod etc plus jacket and it would be easily 2500.00 bucks so after deductible of 500. 00 it would be worth the claim. hmm this has really gotten me to thinking and for a ol beachbum_ like me that is not good
Peace bukweet_

You would be far better off bolting the bags in place. I never had it happen to my Vic XC or my Electra Glide but a buddy lost one on his Electra Glide last year. It took us an hour to find it and luckily it was just scuffed up a little bit. Zeus fasteners are good. Bolts are better.

And me to the list of loosing a bag on the Highway. I lost a right soft saddlebag on my Vegas, and my favorite Half helment on the northside of Atlanta a couple months ago. I had used a cargo netbungy cord to strap the helmet to the passenger seat hooking the bungee to the brackets. The lock (I think) failed and the upward pull from the bungee just pulled the bag right off the bushings and onto I-85 and took my helmet with it. I didn't know it till I got off to fuel up and.......What the $%#@...... Fortunately for me I only had my rain gear, flashlight, and keys to the saddlebag lock in there.

If I bought from a dealer I had to buy two new bags plus mounting brackets so it was gonna be about $500. Luckily for me I found the exact same bag I lost on E-bay with a hard mount bracket for $60. Needless to say I snatched it up. Found a guy selling a pair of hard mount brackets for $40 two weeks later and got those too as I didn't need a mis-matched mounting pair of Saddlebags.

After using the hardmounted saddlebag brackets I got an extra addedbonus out of using them as the 70mph shimmy went away. I honestly believe that the airlflow around the bagswas causing the them to rock a lil' bit on the mounts which it turn caused thebike to shimmy at speeds above 65. I've hit 90 since thenwith the hardmounts and the bike is solid! It's a pain in the ass to remove the bags if I want the clean look but it's just one of those things I gotta deal with.

I have been suspicious of this sort of pin-and-ring quick-release mount since I had constant trouble with a set of National Cycle bags working loose time and again. Was not happy to see that my Victory bags were mounted the same way, so I threw down for the Brukus SaddlebagSecure screw-in mounts.

I'm very glad I did.

At a motorcycle rally I attended in May, the wife of one of the attendees arrived at the rally motel in her Toyota Prius, got the sun in her eyes as she pulled into a parking spot, and swiped the rear of my Cross Roads. The car's nose scraped my pipes and the lower edge of my left side hard bag. I don't know how the bike stayed upright, to be honest; the impact was that hard.

With the flimsy OEM mounts, my left bag would almost certainly have popped off and smashed. Instead the Prius had more visible damage than my Victory. *grin*

So needless to say, I'm a Brukus fan.

I heeded the warning of lost saddle bags this weekend, and layed down $7.59 in the local hardware store for four 8mm metric allen head screws, clip-on speed nuts, flat washers and spring washers. Changed out the quick releases in about 15 minutes. Can remove them with the allen wrench in the standard Vic tool kit.

Brukus has a cool product, but I had $30 left over for pie and beer.He also had a cool video of a ride in the Swiss Alps on his site --you know what he did with your $30.

Went to the dealership today to have a Fuel Controller installed and the service manager asked me if I brought the Brukus saddlebag secure that I ordered. I said no, why? His response was that Victory had sent a replacement bag for the one that fell off. Needless to say, I'm back to full storage strength! Big thanks to Victory/Polaris and Pacific Motorsports for helping me out on this one. They must be realizing this is a problem because it only took 3 weeks for the issue to be resolved.

I'm going to have to do at least one per bag on the bolts, I've put it off the first season on the new XR because I have to take them off a couple of times a week to get at the tire to check the tire pressure

Observation: bolt on solutions, while more secure, have the potential it make checking rear tire pressure a more time consuming process...thoughts, or does this activity become more time consuming/challenging , especially if you are not in the comfort of our own garage with our own compressor

IMHO, the drive pulley is more of a pain to work around than the bag. Yes you have to kneel down, actually lay down because the pulley is in the way. Everyone has their own opinion and comfort zone. I took the bags off with the quick connect, and it made finding the valve stem easier, then the time putzing with the bag to get it back on. I guess with practice it would go faster, but seemed a PITA.
I would rather have my bags secured well. They are expensive and the lucky ones have had them replaced when they fall off, but at a cost of not riding, or riding without bags (not supposed to do that) for the weeks it takes. My luck, Vic would call a halt to replacing the day before I walked in.
Cheers

Living in Canada, it's easy to get Metric Bolts. I think it would better to get Metric ones, just so that the Tool-kits doesn't need both SAE and Metric tools.
