Anyone who is contemplating cross country travel, consider owning a full faced or modular helmet to enhance your comfort level in extreme weather conditions while extending your riding day. Almost 40 years ago I figured out that if my face was fully shielded, I could comfortably ride all day in any rain condition from drizzle to downpour at freeway speeds. (Back then it was a NASA looking bubble shield that snapped on your 3/4 helmet) A full faced helmet or modular helmet also helps in very cold weather, the ocasional hailstorm and to protect your face from sunburn. I've found that the water sheds from these style of helmets quickly and doesn't impair my vision in any way. On long trips I always take my modular helmet along with my half helmet. My half helmet is for those 19 States that require them, the modular helmet if strictly for my riding comfort. If I would have to choose to take only one, it would be the modular helmet. I can always flip it up and basically have a 3/4 helmet and feel the breeze, sip on a drink or smoke a cigar. Honestly, I haven't yet found a true full-faced, non-flip up helmet that fits my mellon head, but HJC makes the IS-MAX BT that fits my noggin like a fine Italian glove.
