Intermittent Speedometer

Howdy all,

After reading the forums and researching as much as possible, I think I'm finally at a point where I feel comfortable reaching out and asking for help.

I ride a 2012 Hardball, and I've been chasing a couple of electrical gremlins. I'm down to the last one - intermittent power to the speedometer. After powering on the bike, and when the speedometer is not lit, I'll pull the relay and the speedometer will light right up. If I re-insert the relay, the speedometer goes dark.

While addressing my electrical issues I've checked the connection to the battery, replaced all the fuses and relays in the fuse box, the speed sensor, the rectifier, and the ignition relay. I've also cleaned the ground points behind the battery and on the right side of the frame, and traced the DG/PK wire from the relay to the headlight bucket looking for a frayed or worn wire.

I haven't read of anyone identifying this kind of problem. Did I miss a thread? Does anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks in advance.

Darren

I know @Motorbikerx has some experience with the headlight bucket and electrical gremlins on his Pin. Maybe he has some ideas.

I vaguely recall some convos about the harness down the neck as being a potential for pinched/breaks as well.

how much of the wires did you trace?

Whatever was wrong with mine magically fixed itself, so I'm no help, sorry.

Steel frames that have been bottomed out a few times are known to have wiring harness breaks under the rear fender, it’ll rub through

All these comments are SUPER helpful! Seems like the problem may be coming into focus 🤞

@md2420 -- I inspected the line at the fuse box and the headlight harness, and traced the wire from the fuse box up the loom for a few inches, but based on what you @Bikesofbrads and @BBob are saying, I 1) didn't go far enough and 2) should pay closer attention to the connectors.... I think it may be time to pull the tank, open up the wrap, and trace the wire properly. I'll pay special attention to where the wires are bound together/change direction/or are "stuffed". @BobMoe, I'll definitely check the speed sensor wires and connection points.

@BBob -- Thanks for the heads-up on the soldering, I'll definitely pay closer attention!

@BobMoe -- Thanks for the reminder! I'm working on checking my tendency to want to replace parts --- with, as you can see, only moderate success 🤷‍♂️

@Motorbikerx -- glad your issue got sorted and the gremlins decided to vacate!

I'll keep y'all posted on my progress, but regardless, I owe y'all coffee and a donut/beer!

Agree with the above, a dodgy connection or a wire who's insulation has somewhat rubbed off. Under the tank or between the tank and the headlight would be the most common locations.

Sadly, a new Hard-Ball main wiring harness or an engine wiring harness is NLA. But those same wiring harnesses are available for a later model (2016) CC/CCT.
Engine Harness, item: 2413153 - $324
Main Harness, item: 2413315 - $760

Thanks @Chattanooga_Mark. I was thinking...if one wire is going/worn because the sheathing is old/cracked/dried out/worn....how many more are in my future!? Probably not an immediate issue, but an issue none-the-less....might be nice to have new wires on hand.

Thanks!
If you rally want to get nuts with your wiring, you can buy a complete harness. They're quite common on ebay.
P.S. I really, really hate electrical gremlins.

A Speedo on its way out goes intermittent for a while before it goes completely
I got around my speed sensor issue by going to a $80 GPS 85mm Speedo.
Are you saying your tail light don't work either??
Indicators are part of the speed sensor equation too, I now have to manually find my indicators off after a turn
Just like the old days.
@ObiObiSteve had to do a bit of wire work on his Hardball cos he rides off road on it a lot.

Looks as though I left that part out. My bad. Yeah, as the speedo lights up/loses power and the Horn/Turn Signal relay clicks on and off simultaneously, the tail light comes on and off. I thought I read that the speedo and the taillight are on the same circuit. Apologies for leaving out this detail.

so, to re-cap, but now with the info I left out - sorry!! I really thought I included it:

I power up the bike...all systems are go except for the speedo and the taillights...while powered on, and usually no more than :30 seconds later, the speedo will come on and the tail lights will light up. When this happens, the horn/turn signal relay will give an audible and tactile "click". Most times, and I can't say after how long, since it changes all the time, the speedo will go dark, the tail lights will go dark, and at the same time the horn/turn signal relay will "click". If the bike is powered up, and the speedo is not lit and I pull the horn/turn signal relay, the speedo and tail lights come on right away - if/when I re-insert the horn-turn signal relay, the speedo and tail lights cut out.

PS Vics are quite simple to work on mechanically but not electrically
Ever worse if it's a can-bus model🤪

Copy that. Thanks for the ongoing help/tech support!

Also, just realized I didn't answer your other question...I've had the bike since new in 2012 - bought it from the Ness dealership in Dublin, Ca. That makes me think...I might call them...I know they are out of the victory game, but their techs tend to stay a long time and as a former customer.... who knows, it's a long shot, but it's a shot!

If the speedometer only sometimes works than only look at it when it’s working, problem solved, duh
