Headlight options?

Was wondering if anybody changed out their headlight or bulb to something different? Looking for something brighter. Maybe HID?

Oh yes.

Amazon.com: OPT7 LED Headlight Bulbs w/ Clear Arc-Beam Kit - H4 (9003) - 80w 7,000Lm 6K Cool White CREE - 2 Yr Warranty: Automotive (main bulb)

Amazon.com: JDM ASTAR Extremely Bright Canbus Error Free 3014 Chipsets 194 168 2825 W5W T10 New Style LED Bulbs,Xenon White--2yr Warranty Included: Automotive (small aux bulb)

FYI- A slight amount of work is needed for the main bulb to fit exactly. The composite bracket (whch is still inside the housing when you remove the stock light assembly) Will need to have the center section removed to accommodate the LED's fan housing. Snip it out, and grind back the nubs.

The bulb of course separates into 2 pieces to fit through the rings and such that the bulb mounts to. These smaller pieces may need to be worked for everything to fit back together.

The small bulb just plugs right in. There's not a lot of spare wire, so be patient.

yes I did. I have not been able to ride in the serious dark for an extended period. I rode at twilight- just dark enough to be able to see where it was pointing and it looked pretty good. It's looks downright nasty on the garage wall, lol.

I have to agree with the HID kit. I haven't heard many people (that would be none- zero) with the round headlights that are or were very happy with it at all. Apparently it's terrific for the bullet housing.

I went with "something different" for my Gunner.

Cruzie27, have you called Kyle and asked him about the PCV for your 2016? He may have a solution for you! Also, if he does, he will be at SM City Motorsports the weekend of the 18th for a Cam Party and Dynotuning. He may be able to solve your problems and install your TTs, timing wheel, and cams at the same time he tunes your bike. It's a bit of a ride but not too much more then going to RI.

Here are the links for both sites. (If) my bike were done by then I would ride down and get him to tune it. Gotta make an appointment and you can do that on his website. This could solve your problems all in one shot!

Jan :)

I bought the victoryhid.com low beam kit for my '15 gunner. Just got it installed tonight, haven't taken it out for a ride yet so holding judgement on the effectiveness of the light for now.

What I can tell you is that the installation instructions on the victoryhid.com site are not complete for a gunner install - you have to do more than the instructions show on the site.

Specifically:

- You'll need to remove the plastic "basket" brace inside the gunner headlight housing in order to make space for the extra ballast/igniter housings and the extra wiring to fit.

- In addition to disassembling the 3 prong connector to get the wires to pass through the hole in the bulb holder, you'll also have to disassemble a 2 connector coupling which the video on the site doesn't cover. I recommend taking a picture of the wire color/connector orientations on both connectors before disassembling them as both of them are easy to re-assemble with the wires in the wrong positions on the connectors!

- You'll have to be very creative with the arrangement of the wiring/connectors/ballast/igniter inside the housing in order to get everything to fit back together, and even then it was an absolute bear to get the headlight housing cap back on and the cap screw started - had to push so hard on the housing in order to get the cap/screw aligned I was worried I was going to crack the headlight glass.

So I've got about an hour's worth of night-time riding with the VictoryHID kit in now, mostly on suburban streets (no highway yet). Some observations:

- When viewed head on it is extraordinarily brighter than the stock bulb - definitely more noticeable by other traffic.

- The HID Light definitely helps me see objects in the road (potholes/seams/patches) better, and anything that is reflective (street signs) appear brilliant compared to stock bulb.

- I effectively no longer have a high beam. The HID portion of the kit runs on the low beam, and the high beam turns on a regular non-HID bulb (I think). Basically, when I switch from low beam to high beam the light output on the high beam is so much less that it's as though I just shut the headlight off.

- I wish the HID beam pattern projected farther ahead. It does well illuminating about 10-15 yards or so in front of the bike, and there is lots of spill to the sides which helps when making slow speed turns, but I'd like some more beam throw to illuminate farther ahead.

- The headlight housing gets very warm, but it's not so hot that I'm worried about anything melting or burning.

- The HID light has not failed to light (when turning on bike or switching from low to high beams and back) or gone out yet. I do wait several seconds after turning the ignition on before attempting to start the bike.

I'm thinking about getting some smaller LED lights in separate housings to supplement the HID light. I may aim the LED's farther ahead and have them switched so they'll effectively become my "high beams".

I just wonder how much high beam abuse you will take from oncoming traffic? My regular lights are pretty bright, ( I do not have HID lights) when I used highbeams people in front of me flash their highs at me all the time...if I don't turn them off fast enough.

@Cruzie27 what kinda of Aux lights are those..?
Do you have a link for them?

No worries, Ill find them, now that I know what they are, thx

If you look at your headlight housing you will see the silver colored mount that your headlight gets bolted to. This v bar has a slot that silver mount goes thru, basically it just sits between the lower triple and the head light mount. There is just barely enough thead to get the lock nut on the underside back on correctly with the light bar in place.

With the stock housing you may have to flip the silver mounting bracket around,. That will push the headlight up and forward just a little bit if you need the room for the stock headlight to clear the v bar. There was a guy in NY that used a 7" headlight housing to mount one of the JW Speaker LED lights. You would have to make it work but it can be done and is another option if you wanted to stay with a round headlight.

I think there is an accessory light plug on the harness,. But I can't be sure. Next time I have the headlight housing apart I will look. I used a aux light & relay wiring kit for mine and it was simple enough.

No worries, Ill find them, now that I know what they are, thx
The light housings are off of a 2014 model and in addition to the housings,. Bezel,. Rounded washer, & other small hardware you need to make sure you get the "nest" or "pursuit light nests". This part has the little cutouts to hold your lights level, and a notch to keep it in place in the housing, which is all secured by the bezel. If you do not get that unassuming little part for each housing the vibration from operating the motorcycle will make the lights turn / spin in the housings. This damages the lens of the light,.... Learned that the hard way.

The HD lights were the most expensive part of the whole thing. The rest of the hardware to include the light bar was maybe $120-$150USD. (The light bar was around $80)

Have an Adjure 7" housing on order.

In the meantime, I bought and installed one of the OPT7 LED bulbs linked by JudgeRedd earlier in this thread.

In addition to cutting the center out of the support "cage" that sits behind the reflector housing, I also had to use a dremel to file down the ridge on the back of the bulb mounting plate (the part that the bulb attaches to and that you then twist-lock into the reflector housing) as the ridge made the mounting plate too wide for all the pieces of the OPT7 bulb to clamp together.

Got it out for about a 30 minute ride tonight and like it much better than the Victory HID - especially the fact that there's only one slim electronics piece to fit into the headlight housing. I like the light pattern and throw much better, and also like the fact that I don't have to worry about when I crank versus turn on the ignition. The fan attached to the OPT7 bulb can be heard whirring away as soon as you turn the key which is mildy interesting, but once the bike is started you can't hear it.

This will hold me until I get the the 7" housing and Genssi LED light I ordered mounted.

So, the LED bulbs work good in the stock headlamp? I am looking at options. What is the advantage of a 7" lamp vs a 5" that is there now? I would assume possibly you could have a wider beam pattern, brightness based off the bulb, reflection, and lense clarity. I will be looking for this V bar you guys bought, need something to light up the corners since light pollution isn't a thing in my area.

If I still had the stock setup and wanted to upgrade to LED I would look at the 7" Trucklite phase 7 headlight. It has a very wide pattern with enough LUX to light up everything you need. Additionally I feel it's high beam would be more useful than the one on the Victory beacon LED. You would still be able to add aux lights later if you needed or wanted them. I feel that would be the most cost effective way to get the quality & performance I want out of a headlight.

Personally I would not bother with the bulbs,. That's just me and I very much have a buy once cry once mindset. If it works good enough for you, go for it.

The town where I live is surrounded by back mountain roads that stretch for miles in every direction,. So I understand what you mean by no light pollution in your area. The stock headlight assembly was not getting it done. Both the light and light pattern were exceptionally useless out of the 5" stock housing.

When you get a chance watch this video, it should point you in a good direction.

EXCITING! Found the Black 7 inch housing on EBAY ( unavailable everywhere else) and purchased the headlamp @Cruzie27 mentioned via Amazon. Hope my wife doesn't find out since I have the Conquest Assault pipes coming on the same day as my headlamp bucket ! haha. oh well. Time to go buy the exercise equipment she has been wanting.

Wondering if anyone needed to buy the anti-flicker module for their LED lamp. didnt need anything for my LED turn signals, but they came complete with resistors and what not.

Yeah, i willsee how it goes and if i dont like it i will sell it. I was looking for a black bullet style housing, but they are all chrome. Plasti dip is an option but i wanted to try the less expensive housing first.

Good luck

Ok, if you find you need more volume then the next cheapest bottom-mount bucket option I've found is the adjure housings - they can be found for $100-$125 on ebay. I just received mine today, it definitely has the needed volume, but it also needs a lot of modification. I'm going to have to mill a hole in the back of the housing to admit the wiring and I'm probably going to have it bead blasted to strip the chrome and then cerakoted or powder coated black.

Hopefully I still come in several hundred dollars under the cost of a Victory housing once all that is done.

Alrighty, anyone following this one. I got my items today. Biker's Choice 7" bottom mount headlight with mount block. And truck lite 27270C lamp.

To get the halogen lamp out, i suggest using a small tool to release the plug and pull wires out. I left the 2 ground wires zip tied in the bucket just because.

Did the same to get the LED lamp in and used the grommet so the wires don't rub. This removed the hole enlarging step.
I'll post pics before and after install if it's okay.

I plan on trying to find a larger wire loom for protection and aesthetics.

That slipped my mind. I will post pics either later or tomorrow and I'll probably over analyze the situation. Haha

So in my exhausted and excited rush to install the headlight. I complerely forgot about the jumble of wires in the OE bucket.
I will have to enlarge it some and will be using a much larger grommet.

I noticed a few unused wires in there for hand warmers? Top and bottom plugs? Some others i couldnt find tags on. Will update later in the day.

an HID kit sounds cool, if i went that route i would have to get a projector lense fitted as to direct all of that blinding light. When I lived in california, people got tickets for that mess. Here in Washington however, sheriff usually is not out and everyone and their entire bloodline has HID kits in a stock headlamp housing. A TON of visibility is lost to a setup like that.

As it stands right now, I have the 7 inch installed with a halogen bulb and get better lighting. The TRUCK LITE 7" LED lamp has an H4 connector, but the terminals that came attached are too wide so i will be clipping those and adding a regular H4 male connector soon. I will take before and after pics between 7" lamps as i dont want to swap to 5" again for pics
