Well, it's better than starting another oil thread. The answer to the question of which oil is best is Royal Purple Coconut oil.

If you had to rank exhausts from 1 to 10 with 1 being stock, 3 being Stage One (probably generous with giving it a three), and ten being something really obnoxious, what would your picks be for 5 through 10 on the steel frame cruisers in terms of sound?

On this scale of one to ten, where would you put the Pro Street Turn Outs? I've been searching youtube for sound clips of exhausts I'm interested in, and honestly I'm fairly certain most of those videos were filmed with a potato. I'm looking for a 6-7 with nice tone and no cackling.

Thanks!

Man I wish I could tell you what the guy had on his Victory the other day......
I was at a red light. 2 bikes pull up beside me one a street glide I think.
One of the Harley bikes with no fairing. And a Steel frame Vic with big apes.

Now I gotta tell you I love the sound of a Harley. And at idle the Harley sounded fantastic. The Vic not so much.

The light turns green and I slam my foot to the floor and the Vic passes me followed by the Harley.

With the revs up under acceleration the Vic sounded AMAZZZZZZZZING.
It had the potatoe potatoe sound but with an added raspy power effect that I can't explain.
The Harley sounded typical Harley. Very nice sound.

Choose carfully because what ever the victory guy had on that bike it was the best sound coming from a MC I have ever had the pleasure of hearing....

I don't brag up victory often but I will always give credit were its due...

I would rate at about a seven or eight my Santa Rosa downswept on my Vegas. Nice and not to loud at idle, but graba a handfull and they wake up. But the best sound ever from a bike is a knucklehead with short tuned straights. You can actuslly HEAR the engine breathe; in and out , beautiful sound.

I can only give an opinion on mine. I have a Trask Performance Hot Rod 2-1 exhaust and I'd say it's a 7 on your mystery scale. No comparison to stock or stage 1 really, just all over better. Not wide open annoying, just loud enough and full of character. If that makes any sense :) Not the cheapest option out there but I would buy them again. Wait, I wrecked my bike and did buy them again :) I heard bassani turnouts and Stage 1 straights as well as swept in person, mine sound waaaaay better to my ear.

The only sound I like better than my Bassani Turn outs is the Trask. My turn outs popped loud enough to frighten farm animals before I added a PCV and had it Dyno tuned.
Now when gearing down and letting off the throttle suddenly I get the occasional pop, but it sounds like a hot rod now rather than an old piece of junk like before.
If I had to score them, I would give the Bassani a 9.5 and the Trask a 10.
To hear how they sound I connected my iPad to my sound system cued up the Trask sound clip.
After hearing it, my wife walked in from another room and dropped her panties.
Ok. Maybe that only happened in my mind, but yeah, they sound that good!

You do ride a highball so that scenario with your wife is expected.

Did you replace your gaskets when you put the turn outs on? I already have the stage one download and was hoping it would be sufficient until I add an intake and tuner.

The bike had the Bassanis on it when I bought it. For fuel management, it had a no-name POS called Terminal Velocity. The company no longer supported it for non-Harley's and no one knew how to tune it, so I took the advice of folks on this forum and made the changes I mentioned in my earlier post.

I have turnouts on my 8 ball. They're a little loud for me. Probably 8 in terms of volume. If I was given an opportunity to do it over, I'd go with a 2 into 1 strickly for performance. Volume wise I cannot imagine any 2 into 1 louder than my turnouts.

ummmm what about the performance? just saying, the pipes here I see everyone turn their nose up at the stage 1 vics saying they are garbage for performance, that a 2 into 1 is better for power, well which are best for power? right now I have the xbows and I pulled baffles and opened them up for better disposal and sound but am starting to regret the 1000 I spent on the stage 1 and want to get what will make my judge better stronger faster like the 6 million dollar man, that's considering that im getting cams and pcv next for my girl ;)

Don't forget to junk the airbox and replace with one of the lloydz options Tazman or your $s will be wasted with cams & PCV, if you're going that far I would bit the bullet and stick in PTS and TT's.
As for this 1-10 malarky, my mate has the Bassanni turnouts on his HB which he thought were way to loud for comfort in the UK. That is until I slapped a set of Conquest Customs Octanes on my Vegas, he now reckons he can't hear his pipes when I ride with him.
So, Turnouts 7, CC Octanes 10.
The Octanes have a nice but not offensive V8 hot rod style throb at tickover, a nice meaty I mean business sound on cruise, and a fantastic burble on the over-run.
BUT Ohh Boy, at WOT they sound like you've unleashed the hounds of hell.

We all need to start using Decibel readings when we discuss pipes. It's rather pointless without. Those Trask Hot Rods may be great out in the country with no walls and a heavy / noise dampening helmet but I bet they are loud as hell in the city. That or you are deaf!

I heard a set of Dirty Bird 2-1 for Indians today and the are stupidly loud. In fact I've now seen inside the "muffler" of an RPW Big Slash an if you call a two inch pipe with some chicken wire as the "baffle" you'll be happy.

Decibels people, it's all that we need. What reading at 2750 constant RPM.

If you're happy with the pipes you have now, why would they be garbage? There are some dyno sheets floating around showing little change from the stock set up to stage one, and I think the stage one two into one actually lost a few HP. But if you're happy, who cares about a few HP one way or the other?

Myself, I'm looking for a better way to convert gasoline into noise.

Performance is a subjective thing. Are you looking for more torque? Peak HP? Just want to go fast(er)? For your build, I'd start with Torque Tubes, Power Commander 5, cams, a pipe like the RPW Thor, and a good dyno tune. Or...put the cash you would have spent on those upgrades and buy a used sport bike for those times you want to go fast.

Then again, it's a lot more fun to ride a slow bike fast than it is to ride a fast bike slow.

1) I cut up and tossed the airbox already , I now have an Ness Big Sucker Air cleaner. 2) Lloyds Timing wheel set at +6 degrees. 3) I pulled the baffles and went to town reaming out the stock holes and added 20 more holes each baffle. 4) I wrapped my exhaust header pipes and tossed the stock heat shields to help bring down the temps with just these few changes I have a ton more power according to the old ass-dyno. so now this coming off season I will be doing the Lloyds cam change and the PCV. My wallet is praying that is enough for a couple of years ;) And now I already pull away from 103 HD guys with no trouble. Forgive my ignorance but what are PTS?

MrBB can you get the decibel reading for your pipes? 2750rpm 45% from the outlet hole direction.
Bike is still at the garage getting put back together. The latest estimate is "sometime" next week. When I get it I can take a reading with an iPhone decibel reader. Not sure how accurate those are but I can give it a shot. 45 degree angle from the direct pipe output angle and 18 inches away right? Or something like that. I'll let you know what app I use so you can replicate it on your phone, if you have an iphone as well.
