Dealer is ordering me a D&D exhaust for my new Crossroads tomorrow. I checked part numbers and there's a black and a chrome. Forgive me, but in several exhaust threads they mention wrapped and unwrapped. Can anyone explain that to me?

That is when the header pipes coming from the cylinders are wrapped with a type of heat-resistant cloth. It is mostly done for looks, and is very common on "bobber" style bikes. There are some drawbacks, as without the proper type of installation, the wraps cause the pipes inside to be unusually hot and can damage the pipes. I personally do not think the cross bikes would look good with pipes wrapped....unless maybe you blacked out the chrome.

Thanks, that takes the decision out of it.

Maybe I am wrong. But the way I understand a 'wrapped' baffle on the D and D pipes is all internal. From the outside you would not know the difference in the pipe. There is a material that is wrapped interally around the baffle to help 'muffle' the exhuast sound. The non wrapped pipes will be louder than the wrapped. In time, the interal wrap will burn away and need to be re wrapped if you want to tone down the sound some.

This is correct

So if I get wrapped, they'll eventually be unwrapped anyway? The best of both world's and one price, I like that. Thanks.

D & D makes great pipes. Had em on my Harley, nice.
Also they have excellent customer service dept.

Just so you know... it will be a long time before the wrap burns. Wrap used to be fiberglass... now it is ceramic cloth and lasts much longer. The wrapped are not as loud, but the trade off is a deeper throatier sound than the unwrapped.

I have a little bit of experiance with this as I have the D&D pipes. As somebody stated earlier the difference between the wrapped and unwrapped is the baffles do have a material covering the outside of the baffle core. There is some discussion here about the material burning off, well if it does you will not be able to rewrap them on the D&D pipes. The baffle cores are all welded shut. I bought a used set of D&D only to find out about the wrapped verses unwrapped later. Funny I put my foot in my mouth in an earlier post about this also as a guy was asking about wrapping bafles in another post and I was telling him how easy it would be to wrap the D&D's and I had already purchased the material to do it but that was right before I actually took the baffles out for myself so I had to retract that statement. You can take the baffle out but the core is welded into a housing that prevents you from getting to it.

I wanted performance over sound and thought I would purchase baffle material and wrap them myself as I had done this with many a dirt bike and ATV over the years. When I took the baffles out much to my surprise I found out they are all welded shut and you canot get directly the baffle core. So I called D&D to ask the sound difference and I discussed with their tech support. They claimed they have no sound measurements between the two baffles but that decibal rating would be very close to the same other than the wrapped pipes would have a deeper throatier sound. I have not actually witnessed both pipes with wrapped verses unwrapped so I can't really say if tech support was pulling my leg. And pruchasing the wrapped baffle for my own testing was out of the question as it would have eliminated all of my savings of buying used in the first place. I can't remember the exact cost of replacement baffles but I do know it was in the several hundred dollar range.

Ordered the Chrome 45 degree cut wrapped. Getting antsy now...... Thanks all.

Make sure to report back once you get em. I'm sure you'll like the sound.

Funny, but you're right. I did make one this afternoon but now I am searching for the information on how to upload it. Do I have to upload it to you tube first?

Ok, here it is. 450 miles on the bike and about 200 on the exhaust. I think it's going to be just right. What do you think?

It already had the Stage 1 exhaust on it. Dealer ordered it that way so it has the Stage 1 flash. I doubt it has anything else. I have a Stage 1 exhaust extra. :)
