Hi guys just wanted to voice my opinion on which speaker I think sounds the best and share a tip on increasing sound quality. I purchased the Alpinestars first and tried them out for a week. They are definitely an improvement over stock but to me had very strange sound. Bass is pretty non existent but can expect much from a 5.25. I'm only running off head unit so I'm sure sound would be much better with an amp. I thought I'd give the polks a try and to me they definitely sound much fuller and are more efficient running off the factory head unit. One thing I did try was adding some poly fill into speaker enclosures and that made a world of difference sweetening the sound and making the bass a bit tighter and punchy. Poly fill I got out of a couple old stuffed animals for free...lol Anyway hope this info helps!

Did you buy these?
Polk Audio DB521 5.25-Inch Coaxial Speakers

In my opinion the Polk's hit harder on the bass. Or should I say they actually have bass.

I compared them parked and on a ride. I could here them both up to 80mph but the polks def sounded better in my opinion. Another thing is no matter what speaker the factory head unit to me only sounds good listening in aux. I have a 15 dollar bluetooth receiver plugged in and stream pandora.

With an amp you may find that the Alpines will outperform the polls.

I put 4 Alpines in my Voyager way back when and I didn't like them I added an amp 300 watts and wow ! It kicked a$$ in the same type of enclosures.

An amp is the way to go. Even a 2 channel small one for now and not hard to wire up.

Agreed... I'm sure the alpines or polks for that matter would sound much nicer with an aftermarket amp. Just basing it running off of the factory head unit. The polks (45 watts rms) are def more efficient but don't handle as much power as the alpines (55 watts rms). They are both nice speakers just my preference after trying both. I def thing adding the poly fill in the enclosure is a must either way. I pan on adding an amp at some point but windscreen is next purchase!

im trying to figure out what to put in my trunk. will be running off of a 400 w (45w rms @ 4Ω) kenwood amp, and a sony head unit. i was looking at the Polk DXi521s. Anybody know a better one that doesn't require me hacking up my trunk?

When I changed mine I couldn't find anything that would fit in the trunk without hacking it up. There isn't any room for a larger magnet back there.

I bought the Alpines w/ the 2 channel Rockford-Fosgate Punch amp from the Witchdoctor. I'm very happy with the sound but I think you'll be happy with either. They're both quality speakers.

I recently put in a set of Polk DB521's to replace the Kickers off the stock head unit of my XC and I'm very happy with them. The Polk's have a better sound field and range, plus they can handle up to full volume of the system without distortion.

I went with the Polks as I have the same brand in my home theater system. To cut the trunk I used a 3.5 inch hole saw with a very clean finish, allowing the magnets to fit. Advice if you cut...............go slow. It will be worth it as the trunk functions as an enclosure, enhancing the bass significantly better than the stock speakers. Adding an amp next. Good luck.
