Hello all,

So I bought my 15 Highball a month an a half ago, bike has been riding great until this afternoon. I go to merge into a highway and my bike starts sputtering pretty hard at 4K RPMs, let off try again and it repeats so I pull over. I notice that my speedo doesn’t indicate the gear anymore (just - -) and the speedo doesn’t move past 0.

I can ride the bike just fine, under 4K RPMs any gear, but if I wind it out it sputters pretty good (almost like fuel cutoff or limiter).

Any help would be appreciated. I thought maybe it was the new day maker headlight I installed but I took it off and all the wires are fine. The speedo backlight seems to work, as do the indications for neutral and the MPH light as well, just no speedo indications or gear indication.

You may want to search for speedometer related problems in the threads relevant to your specific issue. The reason I joined VOG after getting my '16 Vegas was because the instrument cluster had failed. I searched the threads and found that it was a known issue. Some on brand new bikes like mine. I don't recall cases reporting sputtering at higher RPM but then again I wasn't looking for it.

In my case, the dealer techs claimed that resetting the ECU would do the trick (it didn't) and Polaris asked them to pull the diagnostic codes. Polaris replaced the instrument cluster because they determined it was bad. During this period I rode a Judge whose instrument cluster also went bad (gear indicator - - except neutral and speedometer was dead). I'd guess it was the speed sensor going bad but returned the bike when mine was fixed.

Since your bike was running fine until the sputtering problem coincided with the instrument cluster problem, they are likely correlated and perhaps stem from a sensor related problem. It's possible the speedometer is not the issue. The ECU needs various sensor input to estimate state variables including gear position and how much fuel to inject. Pulling trouble codes would be the direct way to identify the cause(s).

Hopefully the two are related and it's an easy fix, the bike only has 6k miles on it (800 of those I put on it), the bike is stock (as far as I can tell) besides the addition of the LED headlight and the previous owner removing the rear section of the exhaust (cats still installed, O2s unplugged). Not sure about Victory warranties, let alone warranties being honored by Polaris now that Vic is dead. Looks like I'll be scheduling an appointment with a Polaris or Indian dealer soon though.

if a former owner "tried" to eliminate the clutch safety as i did a similar thing happens as i could not rev past 4G, i carefully reconnected + all is well. it works on earlier bikes without closed loop though. possibly someone tried that or a related issue, good luck!

not sure about the kickstand, but i just cut wires going to clutch switch + put them together. it worked on my 2012 bonnie but not the VIC. owners report issues with safety equipment on many bikes, my bonneville is prone to kick stand issues!!

thats exactly how mine acted, but i knew the issue as it was ok before my modification, possibly even a faulty clutch safety switch located in the handlebars. i am not very electrical but the manual says to check the switch with an ohmmeter across the switch terminals 3.5K with lever released . used to be able to download a manual free. lots of savier guys than i here but you need to know the basics + have tools + equipment. always let your location known as there are many who might help if they are near

I checked the connection and it was still unmolested so I just made sure it was seated properly (it was) and plugged my o2 sensors back in preparation for my Maximus tune, damn speedo works again as does gear selection...

I’m thinking about taking it to a dealer and having them replace the unit (how long does the factory warranty last and is it transferable?) I’ll check the ohm readings tomorrow for sure just to double check. I found a lot of places where the wires can rub on things and I’m going to preventively wrap them all to avoid any of them rubbing through and causing me issues down the road.

glad its sorted! possibly messing with it helped, electrical is so finicky!!! unless you got an extended warranty that was transferred your prolly on your $$$ + stealers will surely take them. i do everything i can + have a good friend that was a ducati dealer-tech that is beyond sharp!!!
