Seems ilke this is a known problem with the 106. I have a VIsion and have had it happena more than a few times in 30,000 miles. Never really a safety issue, just a pain. No one seems to have a good answer as to the problem.
From what I can find out, the ECU is a closed loop system and operates at something like 30hz. making it a very slow control system. Engine braking and rapid throttle input cause the system to think it is running too rich/lean and tries to correct it. By the time it corrects the system actually stalls the engine.
Some causes outside of this are:
1) Loose battery connections
2) Idle Air control Fault
3) Operator Error ( Sorry but it is a fact)
4) EPA constraints and current design
5) 40 Amp Main breaker
Some solutions:
1) Lloyds Idle Air Controller and adjust.
2) Tighten battery connections add lock washers
3) With OEM configuration, do not blip on downshifts and do not use engine braking excessivly Zero Throttle and High RPM confuse the Fuel control system.
4) Lloyds Adjustable Time wheel
5) 40 Amp main breaker replace with Automotive grade unit..(NAPA, etc)
As to a safety concern, I have seen and expirenced many a time when I wanted to merg into moving traffic only to have the bike stall. Here in the DC/MD/VA area thatIS a safety concern. As to locking up thet wheel every time mine dies was at slow speed or getting ready to accelerat from a stop. The rear wheel never "locked up" causing a controlablity issue.
The OEM bike design is a good design. Perfect? NO, room for improvement YES!
My modifications provide a safe and reliable machine to ride with no stalling issues. When I buy another Vic, I would start with cams, timing wheel and tunner right from the get go.
