Not a fan of the Goldwhale but as far as being the standard in long range comfort, I'd have to agree with you. It's just too massive for me. These big baggers which I too now own are not at all what I'd be looking at were I 30 years younger as they exemplify 2 wheel touring transportation rather than the motorcycling experience. But I no doubt am contradicting myself as the older I get the more sense these behemoths make. Just hope I don't have to look for a couple young guys to help me pick this bastard up should I ever drop it.

Maybe someone will remember this, but last year there was a photo of a black bike with no markings on it floating around, some claimed this was the liquid cooled cross country. I remember thinking that it looked similar to the royal star, but have not been able to find the picture.

Hello from Montana! My son found a picture on a fairly obscure Yamaha touring link. I'm hoping the picture he sent me is here; neither of us recognized this bike as any of previous models we are familiar with.

I am not sure I agree with that.. Cant speak for the newer stuff but I can say I bumped into a couple riding one of the old Yamaha touring bikes a couple times, once out east in Nova Scotia and another time at Wall Drug on the way out to Sturgis. They were riding one of those fixed fairing (ugly) Yamaha Ventures of the mid 80's. 300,000 miles plus and it was still running strong. That funky thing didnt need a bigger motor - it ran stupid crazy just like it was even with all those miles on it and loaded down with a tent hanging off the back.. It was covered in stickers from all the places they had been. When I saw it out at Wall Drug, there must of been 200 Harley riders taking pics of the thing.. Guy and his wife were saying it was the 4th or 5th one they had worn out. They had over a million miles accumulated on em and still riding em.. Sure looked like some pretty awesome Jap crap to me!!
I know one thing,, if this thing is anything like those old ones that had the little 1200cc Vmax motors in em and now get the new 1700cc Vmax motor in em,,,,,,, the touring world may be in for some real changes in benchmark...
Thinking back at the times Yamaha has came out with amazing things (remembering that v-4 750 two stroke race bike - WOW was that amazing - lots of others too) it would be just like those people at Yamaha to make motorcycling history just after Polaris cut our throats and stopped producing Vics.. Now I cant help but wonder if Yamaha had advanced notice that Polaris was tossing in the towel on our bikes.

If it ends up being a fixed fairing bike, I think Yamaha was probably going after both the Goldwing and the Vision with their upgraded tech (GPS, bluetooth, etc) Especially since the Goldwing still has all those buttons. It will be good timing since Victory forfeited.

You forgot Harley in your group above, they also have a fixed fairing model that seems to sell very well

This intrigues me. My last bike was an '06 Star Roadliner, with tons of upgrades, including a Hoppe fairing, big air kit, and tuned. LOVED that bike, but traded in towards my Cross Country Tour.
The biggest problem with the 'Liners, was the small gas tank, being only around 4 gallons. One of the biggest, smoothest engines on any bike, and a very small tank. Used to drive me nuts, stopping so often, when I should get another 70-80 miles per tank.
Other than that, I really do miss the 'Liner.

I am looking forward to trying that BMW bagger...of course I have no intention but just trying it. it will take allot for me to get rid of my Vision. Unless its another Vision with a 116 supercharged.

    VISION, BABY!
I keep wondering WHAT bike would get me off the Vision. Handling is awesome-- so light, and the comfort is ridiculous.
