What do you do when your clutch cable breaks while cruising?

If your cable breaks-your not stranded. As long as you have a good battery & can take a path with minimal stop signs, you can time the lights. You have to down shift as you slow and get into netural when stopping, then kill the engine. To start -put into gear and hit the starter and your on your way again, shifting into higher gears by matching engine speed.
Get a cable stop or two & throw it in a baggie and keep it in your bag or taped inside a side cover or under your seat-they don't take up any space and with a screwdriver your back in business.

Others have taken a rag to protect the clutch lever on the engine and clamped a vice grip wrench on-instant suicide shifter.
For preventive maintance-if you have a Dremel tool-remove your lever, get a bullet shaped felt polish tip with jewlers rouge and polish the bearing surfaces inside and around where the barrel and cable sit. I like to use DuPont TFE dry lube wax-it doesn't attract dirt/grit like a grease will and your clutch will be as smooth as it's ever going to get.
