My bike sounds horrible from 2,200 - at least 4,000 rpm. I’m starting to believe it’s in the transmission. The motor itself sounds great at idle and revving while sitting still. I’ve also noticed that if I downshift to first, say around 10-15 mph, and coast there’sa funny tapping sound in the tranny. My motor is solid, 4500 miles, no oil usage, no hard state, 44.6 mpg with a passenger, etc. Could it be the tranny?

Straddle the bike at idle and with the front brake held tight lean the bike to the right and to the left. If you hear a chattering noise, turn the bike off and stop using it until you learn about the C-Clip in the transmission. If you don’t hear a chattering noise with the engine running and the bike leaned over, that’s great news. At that point you’ll move on to other testing.

What’s the C Clip and what damage if I continue riding? Easy fix or expensive?

It's a 2500 -$3,000 fix at a shop. Motor has to come out.

Are all of the Motors a problem that fall in that timeframe? What do they do to the motor to fix it?

I think 08 Vegas Rider is referring to the c-clip issue. The recall I linked is different.

I suggest you call a dealer and get them to inspect and fix under the recall. If an old Vic dealer and now an Indian dealer, they should be able to do it.

IIRC most, if not all of the failures (if they were to happen) happened fairly quickly….like in the first 5k miles. You say you are at 4500 right now?

If it's the dreaded "C" clip you have to lean it to the right, 10 to 15 degrees should do it.
Somewhere on youtube there's a video about it. Saw it a couple years ago.
    Call Rylan.

If you hear the dreaded chattering noise with the engine idleing and the bike leaning, that’s terrible news. The engine has to come out of the frame and the engine case has to come apart to access a shaft in the transmission. It’s faster and less expensive to buy a used motor than it is to pay to have the $2 C-Clip replaced. I sincerely hope your motor doesn’t chatter when leaned over.

The chattering noise is the gears in the transmission moving and crashing into each other because the broken C-Clip isn’t able to hold them in position. This is NOT a common problem but it’s typically very well known and feared.

The chattering noise is also quite distinct so it shouldn’t get mistaken for a noisy lifter or any other ‘normal’ sound the 106 makes.
