Hello folks. New member here. Name's Steve.

I spent most of last year researching, studying, shopping for a large displacement V-twin. And found the gemstone, a low-mileage (600 miles) 2016 Victory Vegas at Dream Machines of San Antonio.

Performed the 1st service inspection, found and corrected several engineering/manufacturing/assembly errors. I was a motorcycle mechanic and service manager back in the '70s, and that's where my head is at. Kicking and clawing while being dragged into the 21st century.

It's like learning to ride all over again. This Victory is a wonderful piece of technology, has features that address and solve design flaws of yesteryear.

    Except,

This wonderful machine is seriously EPA strangled. The surging idle, stifled roll-on, closed throttle exhaust popping, and the following bucking bronco on throttle reapplication, has got to go.

Among other things, installed a Maximus, have the wide-band kit a-ready, and made a glass cockpit to display Direct Link's ECU values.

Just started evaluating the readouts, but I can tell you this,

There's some really screwy ignition timings in there.

    This'll take a while...

Welcome to the VOG. I've never heard of anyone programming their ECU with the Maximus on their own. Or are working with a Victory tech like Noe down there?

    Welcome aboard!
Get a 1/4 turn for your throttle, O2 eliminators, and get help with the tune!
When you add more to the bike such as exhaust, cams, and Torque tubes you'll need another tune.

Welcome and congrats. As Rooster Cogburn once so eloquently said "If I ever meet one of you Texas waddies who says he had never drank water out of a horse track I think I’ll shake his hand, give him a Daniel Webster cigar."

I like your attitude... is that an XS 650?

Anyway… I, like you, have always been baffled that I could make a 3-tuning-circuit carburetor run seamlessly and perfect, but a bike with fuel injectors, ECU, and O2 sensors is all huck-a buck, wants to stall, and has terrible drivability...

At least the Victory is a cable throttle. Geeeeze I hate throttle by wire.

Don't do the O2 eliminators with they Max, it needs them. Once you get it figured out you'll be happier than a camel on hump day.

Sorry for the late response, guys. Too many ranch chores, not enuff me to git-'er-done.

    Thanx, Lou8700.

Yes, this will be challenging. I'd thought about just loading it up and trailering it to Noe's place (about 300 miles east of here). But, that was then, and I'm old and in the high-risk group (cancer survivor, bone marrow transplants, compromised immune system). So, I'll just stay out here on my remote 20-acre plot, go about it in my own slow/methodological manner, and clank away on this thing. Would love to do a "Vulcan mind meld" with the top tuners (after hours, when the rates are lower). Expecting a fun learning experience...

    Thanx, primethious.

Yes, the 1/4 turn ring is ingenious. Made one from 1-1/2" PVC coupler. It reduces the throttle twist by about 15 degrees, from about 105 to 90.
I have the 16-17 heater-type O2 plugs, to avoid throwing codes during wideband.

Haha, it never ends, does it?
Yes, I'll probably be doing perpetual tunings...

Haha, one of my fav Duke movies.

Nope, never drank water out of a horse track.
So, c'mon down and we'll burn a couple Daniel Websters...

    Hey, Half Crazy! Thanx.
Why, yes it is. Here's a calendar pic.

Yeah, I've been following your postings closely. You seem to know whut yer doin', got yer head screwed on right. Your RPW Thor recommendations are topping my list. Being an old/sedate rider, I'll be primarily focused on drivability (but enjoying the "big stick").

So far, what I'm seeing with the weird-ass ignition timings, makes me highly suspicious that it's a bunch of gobbledygook to make the engine pass emissions. And, what I'm seeing doesn't quite match the Maximus supplied base map values. I'll be spending some time in this.

Similar distrust. Old-school cable guy here too. Cable clutch was another checkmark to choose Victory Vegas...

    Thanx, benawhati.
(Where do you guyz come up with these membernames???)

Yes, the original narrowband O2s will be used on final tune.
The O2 eliminators will only be used during wideband testing.

    Haha. One hump, or two?

But, there'll be some grimacing on this journey...
