Synthetic

This is not about synthetic versus good old old fashion oil.
What I want to know is if I change over to synthetic can I go more km/mi between oil changes and not void my warranty?
I have asked at the dealership and I get different answers depending on who I talk to! I find it annoying having to change the oil every 4000km (It works out to be at least 5 times in 4 months) so I had heard that you could go double that if you run synthetic but nobody will commit to what exactly my warranty requires. Anybody know the details on this?

OK, believe it or not this is a VERY hottly debated and controversial topic here. No....I'm NOT KIDDING!...lol
Much has been debated here, and the good news for you is that it's all available for you to read. I suggest that you hit the search box up on the top right of the site, and type in "Oil".
Caution: You might want a double shot of Caffine first.
Shawn
Is there caffein in Skyy, or Scotch?

Look, I'm Irish. Don't get me started on MY preference of "Lubricants"!...lol

So a nice bottle of Jameson 15 Year Old Pot-Stilled for you???

Trix,
I may be talking out my ass here but I think the answer to your question is no as far as your warranty goes. My theory is based upon the wording in most warranty's stating you can use an equal oil but no warranty (car or motorcycle) I have ever read states that you can extend your intervals.
I would be very careful about that.

older i know but gotta comment, absolutely YES!! because real synthetic group IV + V are without any contaminants to begin with as they are synthesized Not refined from CRUDE oil!! on that note most of todays "synthetics" are group III refined CRUDE oil, legally labeled "synthetic" since the 1999 law change, they are cleaner by the xtra processing + like group IV + V oils use better additives. the true synthetic oils DON'T break down as fast offering longer protection. generally any oil blender using the better more costly real synthetic base oils will tell you either on the packaging or their web site. Redline prolly the best oil made easily notes their use of ester base oils . Amsoil has quietly switched to the good group III's but will not say whats in what product!! they prolly use SOME PAO + ester oils in their blends, unlike in the past they touted PAO base oil use!!!

Everything you say is true but regardless the oil's capability of you CANNOT extend your change intervals under warranty and expect Victory to honor it. They are explicit with their mileage and they really don't care what oil you use. Once you are out of warranty you can do anything you want.

Oldie but goodie! :)

Rod hotter resurrected it, I just felt the need to respond since some may think his response means you can extend change intervals and still be covered under warranty. Change intervals are explicit and not subject to oil brand or composition.

Electric bike idea is tempting.

I had a ride in a tesla S and I thought one would be an option as our car but just way to pricey @ $200.000 aussie dollars plus.

No oil threads to worry about with one of them.

Where they sell electric motor bikes is out of range from where I live, would need a recharge half way to get home.

I have spent hours reading oil threads and am glad we don't have grease nipples on our bikes. So what is the best type and brand of battery? Please do not reply

Well, on the subject of Battery Terminal Grease, I would recommend:FIREdevil:

Six year old thread started by someone that's probably not here anymore on a subject that's been beaten to death and didn't need to
be brought back from the dead.

Cool

hey its still cold + snowey! i was not here 6 yrs ago unfortunately! yes while under warranty extended changes will not fly. one Redline 10-40 user noted while he had an extended warranty he changed at 5,000 miles even though testing showed it could go another 5,000 miles!!

I think we all need to get our bikes back on the road! Us northern guys anyway. Grrrrr.

changing oil more often compensates for lesser oils like Vic's 20-40, real synthetics that is only group IV PAO + V Esters are shear stable + use little if any fragile viscosity improvers therefore they last longer while flowing quicker in the cold, not breaking down-shearing in excessive heat, + running cooler all the while protecting your investment!! again unless noted almost all of todays "synthetics" are Group III highly refined CRUDE oil!!!

DoNT change your oil !!!
Strain it out and re use it. You can do this about 3 times. After that go get fresh oil. Doesnt matter which kind. Cheaper the better. Just make sure you have a high $$ oil filter. That right there is all that matters. I think Bosch is the most expensive but if you really want to Impress your friends then get one that says Harley on it. Oooooh yeah baby......

Just use french fry oil. The best is from McDonalds. It comes pre strained.

its true oil does not "wear out" BUT the additives are used up + that is their function. petroleum oils group III legally labeled "synthetic" MUST use more fragile viscosity improvers that are permanently cut up leaving a 40 wt oil a 30 or less in as little as 3,000 miles, as always your bike your $$$, pay me now or pay more later!! lots more

Change oil every 3 k ? Spend that kind of money on Vic oil and change that frequent?

Some of us cook our bacon 1st and clean the pan before we cook the eggs.
Some of us use the same bacon oil to cook the eggs and the French Toast! Now that's living right there. Not long mind ya but living just the same.

Kidding aside. I would dump semi syn and all petroleum oil at least every 3k. I'm at almost 5 k on my beloved blend from the God's (Amsoil) and my motor is getting g a little noisy. Must be time again to perform the ritual.
Preperations must be made...............!
Drain plug Washer........check!
Brake kleen....................check
clean surgical gloves.....check
clean rags ......................check
drain pan.........................check
6 pack beer......................check
5 bottles of Amsoil 20/40 oil especially formulated for Victory motorcycles .............check

Let the Ritual begin. There will be no email or forum response this sunday while performing the task.
Thankyou :beer3:

yes its still winter + being retired have lots of spare time, but i do enjoy learning about lubrication as well as most anything mechanical. a note on Amsoil what i "used" to use, i suspect since their not touting the PAO group IV horn they are using the cheaper legally "synthetic" group III base oils. these are very good + even within a group III classification the properties-quality can vary a bit + still be a legal group III "synthetic", oil changes are cheap insurance no matter what you use!!! i would like to see full specs on the Vic oil, they have them because various tests MUST be run for classification. oil blenders not showing specs know they are not that great. i research a lot + been checking out the gas to liquid oils from royal dutch aka pennzoil + shell products mainly, their diesel oils, they show some specs on their premium oils but omit some, one being HTHS aka high temperature high shear a spec that cant easily be pumped up. a viscosity index spec on new oils can easily be pumped up using more viscosity improvers making the new oil "look" good but a few thousand miles later there polymere additives are chopped up in tight clearances + they are gone forever. this is why refined crude oils don't last long in our bikes!!!
