I'll make this simple. Just looking for any input from those experienced in service..

I have my 2015 HighBall - recently bought it used with 750 miles. I rode it home; it's now in the garage with 800 miles. Owner never had it serviced at the 500 mile mark, so I bought the oil change kit with oil/filter included, and was planning to do that myself (perfectly comfortable with this).
However, after reading through some forums, it sounds worthwhile to let the dealer take a look and perform the first service inspection. The issue is, I'm 60 miles from the dealer.

Should I change the oil and filter myself, then take it to the dealer?
OR
Drive another 60 miles and take it to the dealer for its first service at 860 total miles?

I was over 800 on my first service. Dealer said it wouldn't matter just don't go way over.

The first service is SUPPOSED to be more than just an oil change. They are supposed to go over the entire bike checking everything including torque bolts.

I would have the dealer do the first service and change my own oil after that.

Get that oil changed. You need to get all that pre-lube and break in debris out of there. And I did my service on my new Magnum and my daughters new Gunner. If you are mechanically inclined , the owners manual is pretty detailed and gives you a checklist. Keep all receipts and record your service and they will honor your warranty. Hope this helps. And congrats on the new bike !

You seem like you may be handy with a wrench so I would say give it a try yourself. Most dealer mechanic's wont take the time or give a crap to do it as carefully as you can. Most important things to check are belt alignment and deflection (needs to be overnight cool to do properly). Clutch cable free play adjustment and lube ends. Go over everything / bolts for tightness. Clean and tighten your battery cables. Lot's of how to video's on here, Witchdoctors, youtube etc. Lot's of good oil alternatives out there, Shell Rotella T-6 and wix 51356 filter.

I changed mine at around 650Km's being a semi it shouldn't really matter with breakin, the oil was quite silvery when I dropped it, so I did it again at 2K Km's all good, now I'll stick to every 5-7K Kms.

I did my 500 @ 840. No biggie I used Vic oil then @ 5000 service switched to Maxima. Because the Vic dealer was too far away.

Thanks for the variety of feedback. I was pretty mechanically comfortable with my previous V-Strom, but don't have much familiarity yet with this High-ball. If they're willing, maybe I take the hesitant route and try to observe while the dealer mechanic checks over the whole bike - I'l give 'em a call and see what i can talk them into
