I'd polish the tank as best I could and apply a piece of clear plastic, like a clear bra on it. I can't advise as to stock paint because when I had the flames done on my bike the painter put down at least 3 coats of clear after the fact and the finish is pretty hard. I have had surface scratches but have been able to polish them out with an orbital polisher and polishing compounds. I have found that if i then wax the bike and follow up with several coats of a glaze thatI have or see fewer scratches.
