Hi
A couple years ago I bought a tank bag for my old 82 Honda CX custom.the old bikewas already showing some years and the paint was very strong so I was never thought twice about using the tank bag.
I got my 07 Vegas this spring and with the horror stories of soft paint I have been affraid to use my bag with this bike. It is a OGIO bag, a fairly big one thatholds on with 8 magnets. The material that makes contact with the tank is a softer bendable platic/rubber like crap that I never really liked. Would you guys risk it or should I look into something else that would be a little softer on the tank.

I have heard of peoplecutting the back out of a tee shirt and using itbetween the bag and the tank. The bag still holds, and no effects to the paint.

Now don't get me wrong but IMHO Vic Im sure does many things right but a kid could pick out a better quality of paint than they put on my 09 Black pin.
I used a tank bag (magnet type) on my last 3 bikes and no problem . I used it on a short 2 day run with the Vic riders out of Ft Sask and the paint is shot. Can't bring the luster up agian for nothing.
So my vote would be don't do it on a black Vic . Or get a decent paint job on it first.

I'd polish the tank as best I could and apply a piece of clear plastic, like a clear bra on it. I can't advise as to stock paint because when I had the flames done on my bike the painter put down at least 3 coats of clear after the fact and the finish is pretty hard. I have had surface scratches but have been able to polish them out with an orbital polisher and polishing compounds. I have found that if i then wax the bike and follow up with several coats of a glaze thatI have or see fewer scratches.

Ride faster!! It looks great even if it has scratches!

Black does suck!! My 05 Anniversary KP always looks clean even when dirty, but Skully ALWAYS is dirty!

I can't keep that bike clean to save my life. OH WELL ~~~~~~

It looks clean when I'm moving & even cleaner when I'm going fast

Glad its not just me who thinks the black paint is crap. I had my brand new 2010 Vegas 8 Ball about a week and I noticed marks where my leather pants came into contact with the tank. OK if I'm just wearing denim but not as safe of course. My tank bag won't be getting used, thats for sure.

love the idea behind a tank bag, but won't use it mainly because it takes away from the bike lines when I ride....never had any problems with soft paint issue the black bikes have.

Geez, interesting! I thought it was just me!
I was cleaning up my Black CR this pastSat after a 600 mi trip into VT, NH, from NY. The weatherwas a bitcold for the trip,so I decided to wear My TourMaster Pants (mesh pants with 2 detachable liners for wind/rain and thermal, which was a good choice! Up till then, I had only worn chaps.
As I was cleaning, I noticed a small "smudge" on the gas tank. I tried some cleaner wax, and it helped, but not "gone".
I couldn't figure out how it got there. Then I took a ride on Sunday, and wore the pants again, and figured out the "smudge" was from my pants! Boy, I was pissed! I've had these pants for 2 yrs now, and the CR for only 4mths.
I nevernoticed it onmy other bike, but the gastank was Silver on the sides and Black on top. Never had noticible scratches on the Black onthe old bike, but am noticing things now on the CR. Guess I just need to be REAL careful from now on!
OR do as Syd says, and ride faster! LOL!

Well I got to tell you , I bought my bike for me to use and I will ride with a tank bag . As a matter of fact I ride with one 90% of the time . You are all right in your comments that the paint job or lack there of is a childish attempt at professionalism.Embarrassing to anyone with any pride in there work! That being the case I use my bike and enjoy it I don't spend untold hrs shinning and fluffing over it,I enjoy it simple as a tool for my enjoyment. A few little swirls and scratches well thats all part of the life and trials of my motorcycle. My motto worry less and ride more , the enjoyment you gain from the ride will far exceed the odd scratch or swirl. Drop the shinning cloth and let the clutch out!

You're right Pop. These aren't show bikes they're road bikes. Every time I come home I notice something new from the road, nothing huge but a little mark here and there. Oh well. The one that really bothered me the worst was the first one. After that, it's all par for the course. But I do like to keep it nice and shiny. It's my therapy to go into the garage and spend an hour polishing the bike, especially on days where someone needs to be beaten to death. I take an hour, calm down, and it saves a life. lol
