Andy-there are no In-N-Out locations in Chicago......you are correct that they are only in the west. They are just now getting Sonic Drive-ins in the midwest.
BTW, Sonic is one of my favorite joints as well.....a true old style drive in with curbies on roller skates. Our favorite location is the one right next to Luke Air Force Base. We like to go there during the summer, sit outside under the "misters" and watch the F-16s do their flying maneuvers. Tator Tots, a burger, a shake, and war planes.....can't beat that for family fun.

Never been to, or even seen, an In-n-Out Burger joint,
but we recently got a Five Guys in my town
(Gloucester, MA-old fishing town north of Boston).
I will have to try it on Andy's recommendation.
Have long considered myself a burger connoisseur (sp?),
with the BEST burgers being the ones I personally cook
on the grill while out on the boat with the wife, kids and
friends! Nothing like a lil sun on your bun! ;)

If any of you make it over to the UK, then the best place that I know for a burger is "Sticky Fingers" http://www.stickyfingers.co.uk/ It's owned by Bill Wyman (Ex Rolling Stones) and has the best burgers that I have ever eaten.
The chef is great and I can't think of any other burger joints that I would comment on the chef's abilities.http://www.stickyfingers.co.uk/pdf/sfk-a-la-carte-web.pdf Prices aren't the cheapest in town,by a long way but the quality is great.

Hands down best burger I had was in a locally owned drive-in located in Pittsburg, KS. Yep, in Kansas and spelled with no "h" at the end. The place is (was?) called the 311. They ground their own burger daily, and made burgers to order in just about any combination you could want. They also had great hand cut fries andgreatshakes. Pittsburg State University--Go Gorillas!!
I just heard about a little bar inPaoli, WI that advertises having the best burgers in the state. Maybe it was best in the country. I have not been to this bar, but will get there ASAP for some field research. Just for you guys.

I travel for work and In-and-out Burger is a regular stop when I am in Cali. Locally the best cheap burger in Seattle is Dick's Drive In. Basic menu, starving student prices and always great quality. It is a Seattle tradition. As for the best gourmet burger it would have to be a diner in Idaho but I can't rememeber the mane of the joint!

I'll agree that In-N-Out is pretty darn good and I love their fresh cut fries but here in the Daytona area we have 2 places that are hands down the best burgers I've ever eaten out, The Brickyard (a dive bar on International Speedway Blvd) and The Daily Grind in Port Orange.

As a Chain Hamburger Joint.... Five Guys is Fabulous.. I am lucky enough to have 4 of them within a 20 mile radius of me.. Any Sunday I ride and stay in the area... It is a Five Guys lunch... great fries and burgers and the peanut shells after eating a few hundred blow off my shirt on the way back home.. ;)

After eating Five Guys burgers,, I can't eat frozen stamped patties anymore from the McFast Chain or its brethren of copiers. Not a Sermon, Just a observation..

If in the Northern Va area and you see a blue Vision or red Chopper in front of a Five Guys... Pop in and treat me to a free meal.. I'm not proud... ;)

Powderhorn Saloon in Bragg Creek, Alberta have great burgers and onion rings. Great watering hole for the local riders. Anybody riding close to this area and is in need of food deserve to treat themselves here.

Since I am in Nor-Cal I would have to say that In-N-Out is a great place for burgers. We have them all the time (Besides, my daughter works there). Now I just read in today's paper that Five Guys will be opening here next month. I guess I will have to check them out. We will see whose better. (Sorry Andy, I guess we will have the best of both here in Nor-Cal LOL!)

Steak n Shake and Five Guys are great, however for those of you coming to Sturgis this year you have only one option for the best burger. This is a beast of a burger and I made the mistake of ordering a double once. OMG I thought I was going to explode.

They say it's all about the grill. Apparently this one has been aged/seasoned to perfection because the burgers taste so good.

SUGAR SHACK

The wait will be insane but it will be worth it. If you all help me move Saturday 7 Aug. I'll buy you lunch at Sugar Shack. LoL Seriously though the line will be crazy during Sturgis. It is right in the heart of all the great rides though so it's a win-win.

Best Burger in NorCal, a "Squeeze Inn" cheeseburger in Sacramento. Second best, Taylor's roadside in St. Helena. Both are thumbs up on Diners & Dives.
Aqua,
I have been wanting to try the Squeeze Inn. Espescially now since I work in Sac. I here they had to move it to a new location across the street from the original location. I guess someone sued because it was so small there was no wheelchair access. So now it is in a bigger building. I'm glad you added them. I will have toget there this week.

I vote Five Guys. My daughter told me about it in Atlanta, but we didn't have one here in Brandon Florida, now we have two. I like the Jr. Size the best, grilled onions, mushrooms, cheese, mayo, and a little mustard. One small fry between the wife and I is enough and they are the best I ever had.

Second choice would be Red Robin for me. Like alot of others I remember Fuddruckers, it was good but Five Guys, yummmmmmmmieeeeeeeeeeee

At Portillo's you can get a MALT or a SHAKE.They are known for there beef sandwitches but I think there Charbroiled Burger is very good .Of corse you can get a double cheeseburger and that is twice the feast.they have a couple of other stores now ....One in the Buena Park mall Near Knott's Berry farm in SO.CAL.
