As riders, we've all had our share of fast food joints. So, I thought it might be appropriate to swap some stories on the Best Burgers we've found during our rides.

Personally, I've been a fan of In-N-Out Burgers for many years.

I even featured them in a book I published many years ago and gave them the title of Best Fast Food Burger.

The problem is, this chain is only found in the Western part of the USA. When I'm in California or even Las Vegas, I always find time to get an In-N-Out Burger.

Just a few weeks ago, a friend asked me if I tried Five Guys yet. Tried them, I've never heard of them. As it turns out, this is a growing chain of Burger restaurants.

One of the Five Guys burger joints recently opened just a few miles from my home, so I gave it a try.

The first thing I noticed was that it was very similar to In-N-Out. While neither restaurant is considered true fast food, as the burgers are made to order and not pre-made and sitting under heat lamps, that was a good first sign that I might have found a place to get something similar to an In-N-Out Burger without having to use any frequent flyer miles.

I noticed that to make the wait seem shorter, they offer free, shelled peanuts to eat while you're waiting. Then I took a look at the menu and that was another tip-off that maybe this place would be similar to In-N-Out.

Then I looked at the menu and like In-N-Out, Five Guys specialized in Burgers. No fish burgers, no chicken sandwiches, just Burgers...and a Hot Dogs. If memory serves me correctly, In-N-Out doesn't serve hot dogs and I noticed that Five Guys doesn't offer milk shakes...one of In-N-Out's signature items.

Allow me to point out that Five Guys does something unique with Hot Dogs and that's something that I have to admit, was genius...

As we know, eating a hot dog can be messy...especially if you load it up with stuff. What they did is to first place the "stuff" on the bun, then add the dog on top. Out of the box thinking guys!

So, what was the verdict on the burgers?

Excellent! Yes, the burgers taste like an In-N-Out knock off, but since there's no In and Outs in my neck of the woods, I'm happy about it.

In fact, I'll be meeting DSJR there this week and we'll see if he agrees.

I dont know if they are still in business, but when I was younger I couldn't wait to go to Fudruckers.
Yup. They are still around....but it's spelled with two "D's". As one of the Double D Boys, you should know that!

Andy,
Any chance that when we come through on Friday that 5 Guys is close enough that we could make that our lunch stop?

Yes...that's within range of the exit. I'm guessing it's around 2 miles past the restaurant where we had planned to meet.

DSJR will be checking it out before you get here. I'll put the blame responsibility on his shoulders!

Hey - I'm a Southern California guy - and In-N-Out is a mainstay in my diet. They are just so delicious - simple but good - good - good.

Andy - here's a story that will ruin your day & make you envious. I work w/ a guy that's
about 55 years old. He pulled out his wallet several years and showed me a golden card
from In-N-Out.

When he was 5 or 6 years old his Grandfather told him a new hamburger stand was opening in town (I think it was Baldwin Park, Ca) on Sat. He was told - "We're going to be the first in line to get a burger." Sure as shootin' - his Grandpa had him up & they were right up near the front.

When they ordered their food (they were one of the first one's there) they were thanked by the store manager & he told them they were being given a special card. It's that golden card that entitles the card holder to free In-N-Out food - free - for his entire life!!!!

Great story eh????

I remember when Willard Scott showed me his Gold McDonald's card...I thought I was jealous then. I'll take a Gold In N Out card any day!

(P.S. Sorry about the misspell on In-N-Out in the top posts!)

I've had Five Guys and In-n-Out. Five guys has the cajun fries which are really good. In-N-out has better burgers. My wife loves white castle, while i'd have to say as a chain would be Steak n shake.

Well, I fixed the spelling errors. I figured since I gave DSJR some grief over the double-D's, I'd better fix it before he jumped in and gave me some grief.

After all, anything worth doing, is worth doing right! Even if it takes two tries!

If I am in California I do make a point to eat at least once at In-N-Out burgers.

A 5 Guys just opened in San Antonio and it is a great place to get a nice lunch.

Fudruckers is a few blocks from my office but I only eat there about three times a year.

In San Antonio, TX we do have some favorites.

Gourmet Burger Grill - My wife loves the place. It made #49 in the top Fifty in the State of Texas - Texas Monthly.

Chesters Burgers - Great everything and grease too.

Big'z Famous No. 1 - They have great burgers and host a Bike night once a month. It made #21 in the top Fifty in the State of Texas - Texas Monthly.

A Texas staple is Wataburger. Good burgers and everything else....not great but really good.

The place that made #19 in the top Fifty in the State of Texas - Texas Monthly, is called Momak's and it SUCKS. Oh the burgers are fine but the fries are CRAP. Frozen Fries would be better. Come on how hard is it to make fries. The real sad thing is that I could walk to the place from my house.

Speaking of fries, I love the In-N-Out fry process. Place potato in cutter over frier and pull.....repeat!

Ride safe and eat well my friends!

Just had 5 guys at "Florida's Mall" Orlando. I was blown away. I rarely eat fried burgers anymore, the regular burger was 2 patties. it was great. Followed by a DQ Pumpkin Blizzard...i was almost in cardiac (clogged artery) arrest for the rest of the day!
