Not sure what happened. I haven't been up there in years. This is a sad situation for sure though.

I talked to my buddy that went up there. He said its pretty tight lipped but the word on the street was 3 dead in 3 separate accidents all on the bridge. Not confirmed.

I just looked into this again. Apparently one dead. Bike crossed the centerline and hit a pickup truck.

The update doesn’t mention weather, perhaps the rider had a heart attack, a stroke or somehow otherwise got distracted and lost control. A tight grip on the bars is the wrong technique on this bridge. Regardless, this is a very sad event.

As heartbreaking as the man's death is at least he was on his motorcycle to the very end. I want my death to be a surprise or in my sleep.
Three stages in life on a motorcycle:
1.When you're young you know you can't be killed.
    2. The middle years when it occurs to you, "Hey I could get hurt real bad or get killed on this SOB".
    3. I'm afraid I won't die on my bike.

I was up there and spoke to a woman that witnessed it. Trike was riding the grate with a bike riding next to it. I would never even ride 2 bikes side by side on that grate as the bike moves all over the place on this particular grate. Anyways the trike rear tire rubbed the median divider which immediately caused the trike to turn into oncoming traffic! She said it happened so fast there was no time for either driver to react :-(.

I should also say the info about the bike riding next to the trike came from someone else, not the lady that witnessed it so it may or may not be true. Also there's a story going around that the guy had a heart attack and then steered into the truck.

RIP to all and condolences to the family. I agree about the grates being rough to deal with. Done the bridge a few times and thank God first time there was not much traffic. It feels like both wheels are out of balance when you first hit the grates. I hate bridges to begin with.

    Ride safe all!

I regularly ride side by side but I wouldn’t on that bridge next to a trike.

Ya I edited my comment, that info came from a different lady, not the witness so not sure. I agree though, that grate really sucks to ride on. IMHO, worst bridge grate I've ridden on and I've been across it several times, twice this weekend.

Could be the gentleman got caught up in the gorgeous view from the bridge and drifted over to the median. I have been over the Big Mac at least 50 times, only 4 or 6 on a bike. I met my wife in the U.P. in 95. I was with our softball buddies playing in an annual for us tournament in Curtis. She was with her family which has a summer lake house on Manistique lake. 3 years later we got married at that property overlooking the lake. The U. P. holds special place for me.

Sad. There’s a camera in the pic. The truth will be there.
