Well I had to say goodbye to ever faithful Remington this last Tuesday. First time I've ever had to euthanize for non age related issues.

We were getting ready for bed, the girlfriend let him out the patio door. He growled and raced after some critter. Nothing unusual there for a golden retriever(or most dogs for that matter).

A couple minutes later went to let him in, wasn't on the front porch. Went to the back of the house called for him, didn't see him. Girlfriend went to the front, i went out the back. Heard a thud and yelp. He had gone about a 1/4 mile across my yard, thru neighbors to the county highway. Asshole that hit him didn't even stop.

Well you can guess the rest. Although he had little physical damage, and xrays came back negative for broken bones, he couldn't stand on his hind legs.

We left him overnight for observation and went back in the morning. He still was unable to stand. Assumption was spinal cord or nerve damage. While there was a chance he could heal, he would've needed 24/7 care in the hopes. I don't have the resources to provide or money to pay for that kind of care.

Its a sad choice but it was the right choice.

He would've been 8 next month. Should've had a lot more years, but he was well loved, well taken care of and walked on the trails daily, often twice daily.

So take a moment, talk to your pet, give him a hug or a pet, take a for walk, give a special treat.

Like most things in life, we never appreciate what we have enough until after they've gone.

Sorry hear this, harder when dogs pass than when most people pass. He was lucky dog for those 8-years.

Couple years ago my friend lost his German Shepherd to similar circumstances, unfortunately for him he wasn’t able to say goodbye.

they can test your patience but boy we love them to death!
