I started noticing an almost rattling kind of noise coming out the right side exhaust (if you are looking at the rear of the bike) the other day, but only does in when I'm in gear going down the road. First noticed it in 2nd and up but now noticing it in 1st and up. Any ideas of what it may be?? I got the bike with 7050 miles on it and now at 10500, i need to take it in for a tune up and just regular maintenance check I know, but didn't know if someone else is having the same issue or not. Doesn't make the sound while idling only when in gear.
I also noticed during my ride home tonight that the bike didn't seem to have the same rumble/engine noise is usually has. Seemed to be quieter tonight for some reason. Maybe its just me I don't know. Any ideas or info would help.
Thanks A lot, Ride Safe. Shiny side up.
Once upon a time I had one of the heat shield hose clamps come loose on me. That made a bunch of noise and took about 2 minutes to fix. Hopefully that's all it is. Stick your head under there and take a gander at the hose clamps. I would advise doing this when the bike has had plenty of time to cool down.
The maintenance is simple and is all listed in your owners manual. Mainly just an oil change and some lube in a few spots. The oil change is literally pulling one plug and a filter, change, refill.
I would second checking your shields and go from nut to nut after that.
So its not the baffle and its not the heat shields....its more of a fluttering noise, the weird thing is, it only does it when its in gear not in neutral, then after it warms up its not as loud as when its colder. almost like air is getting in somewhere? Anyone have any ideas what it might be?
A fluttering noise huh. Hmm, could it be belt squeak/rubbing by chance? When is the last time you took a brush with water and soap to your entire belt? Do you hear the noise when riding in the rain? If not, then it's the belt. When you hear the noise, what happens if you disengage the clutch or disengage the clutch then rev the engine to the same RPM where you were hearing the noise?
Something that I've done in the past to pinpoint rattles is to find a gravel road or large gravel parking lot and perform the actions suggested in my last sentence. You could even go so far as to hit the kill switch while the clutch is disengaged, just be safe about it if you try that. If none of that helps you pinpoint it, maybe you could somehow provide us with an audio/video recording of the noise?
I have not clean the belt since i got the bike, that is one thing i plan on doing it this weekend when i get my new tires this weekend and doing my tune up ( oil change, new spark plugs, etc...) I don't think it is the belt because I'm pretty 98% sure i can hear it coming out of the exhaust on the right side. I have have to take that side of the exhaust iff and see if anything is missing or loose or something? i don't know. Cant really find anything about it online. So I'm gonna have to take it one step at a time and see if i can narrow it down. But i will def clean the belt and see if that helps.
Ive already taken it off before, I put the victory stage one try ovals on it. Gonna take it off to see if anything is loose or missing. Its not really affecting the performance of the bike, just annoying to listen to when riding and just want to make sure it doesn't cause any other problems later on down the road.
Mr Brown. I think you may have an exhaust leak. Remove your bag and check. I had a similar situation and that is what it was. Exhaust (slip ons )
We’re removed for rear tire change. One after a day of riding was discovered loose.
Check the mounting bolts also. Flutter sounds are usually associated with air leaks ?
Webby, That kind of sounds like mine, but mine is more constant and higher pitched a little bit, and its thru all the gear. It may be the torque compensator, is there a way for me to fix that or ??? After I get off work tomorrow Im going to check for exhaust leak and clean the belt, to try an narrow down the issue. It didn't seem to be as loud tonight for some reason, maybe because it was a little warmer than usual??? Maybe the cold has something to do with it i don't know....but after tomorrow I will let yall know what i find out.
Im going to do what "fixes" I can on my own, and if none of those work, going to have to take it into a dealer and see if they can ride it and diagnose the problem. But hopefully i can figure it out myself. I like to fix and do what I can myself to learn more about my bike and save money at the same time.
So got new tires on Scarlett this past weekend (Dunlop Elite 4s), and the shop had to take my slip ons off. When they put it back together, they actually fixed the noise problem. Haven't heard the noise since then and hopefully don't plan on hoping not to hear it again. I appreciate all the help and the advice on the fixes. Still going to clean the belt just for regular maintenance that is needed.
