Elite Shooting Sports in Manassas, VA, Will Soon No Longer Be a Public Range
On 17 Jan 2023, the owner of Elite Shooting Sports, who is ready to retire, sold his wonderful indoor public shooting range to Prince William County, Virginia. Starting in June 2023, it'll be an advanced, police department-only, indoor shooting range complex. Bummer. Big-time bummer.
Elite Shooting Sport is, by far, the nicest shooting range that I've frequented. Ever. Elite Shooting Sports is such a nice, well-appointed, indoor range complex that some seven years ago, one of the big three national TV channels' morning programs, CBS This Morning, did a TV feature about that range, and called it a "gun-try club," which is a play on the phrase, country club. The YouTube video of that TV feature is shown above.
By this summer, I'll need to find a different indoor range at which to shoot. The NRA range complex is near me as well. I wonder how the NRA range complex compares to the Elite Shooting Sports range complex.
The Elite Shooting Sports owner used to manage the NRA range complex for a number of years. Then the guy struck out on his own, and took all of the really great characteristics of the NRA range complex and expanded upon them when he built the Elite Shooting Sports range complex.
I'm going to plink some paper targets at the Elite Shooting Sports range complex this upcoming Saturday 21 Jan 2023. I'm thinking about shooting one hundred or two hundred rounds of .40 caliber ammo down range with my Smith & Wesson M&P 40 Compact.
Lately, my favorite target is the left side image of a black, extended cab, Chevy 2500 pick-up truck printed in landscape orientation on a 8.5 inch by 11 inch printer paper. I set that target back 15 feet from the firing line, and I use the image of the driver's side door window as my bullseye target aim point. When that target print-out is set back 15 feet from the firing line, the 1 inch by 1 inch diagonal window image makes for a damned small bullseye target.
Lately, I've had issues "pulling" the trigger down and to the left rather than smoothly "squeezing" the trigger straight back. Still, I've been able to put rounds through that 1 inch by 1 inch diagonal window image when that target was set back 15 feet from the firing line.
I prefer a Modified Weaver shooting stance.
One of the services that Elite Shooting Sports offers its customers is weapons cleaning by its armorer for a nominal fee. It's been a long time since I last cleaned my weapon despite having gone to the shooting range numerous times. I know, I know... Shame on me. So... I think after I'm done shooting this upcoming Saturday, I likely will turn-in my weapon to the armorer to have it deep-cleaned.
I'm going to miss shooting at the Elite Shooting Sports range complex in Manassas, VA, when it finally closes its doors to public this upcoming summertime. It's a great acquisition for the Prince William County Police Department, but it sucks for the shooting public who will be displaced to other ranges.
