I wanted to share this neat design for a baffle with those especially that had the following slip-ons.
Arlen Ness Big Honkers, Witchdoctors Muscle mufflers. Rajun Cajun modified stock exhaust, any gutted muffler and any muffler that you can see thru end to end.
There may be more than I mentioned ani e but you will know if you are in this class of slip on mufflers or open pipe of any diameter.
My Ness Big H mufflers have been great. Great sound until you open her up ! It’s a very loud, hard hitting type note that to those around me say their ears hurt when I get on it.
I made a 1 3/4” lollipop baffle to tame them a bit and restore a little bit of torque
Loss from the open pipe design these carry but that hard hitting note was still there.
Some research in baffles led me to DK Customs. Here I find lollipop baffles with a unique shape designed to create better torque by proper reversion and at the same time deliver a more deep and not as hard hitting exhaust note.
I just in stalled the set made for 4.5” pipes model W258 which is simply 2 5/8” diameter. A bit larger than my homemade version. Also no hole in the middle like my home made washer version but instead a wave design ( rather than a flat plate) much like a flower.
I did make the mistake of not ordering the longer 3/8” ( bolt part) baffles and had to make a run to the hardware store for some SS threaded couplings and 3/8” SS threaded Rod to make the fit perfectly centered inside the Ness Honkers. I placed the torque inserts exactly in the same place ( using the same hole ) that my old lollipop baffles resided in. Just after the mounting location for the custom tips that go on the end of our mufflers. Keep in mind the Ness Honkers are basically a gutted stock or similar muffler design as stock fitted with a short perforated baffle close to the front ( cat end ) of the muffler. This left a very large empty tube to the end adding another 4 to 5 “ for a custom tip. Now that empty tube is filled with a perfect ( to my ears ) exhaust note that delivers the perfect tone and a noticeable difference in throttle response as we climb up the rpm’s shifting from gear to gear.

End result ……? that hard hitting note is so much more subtle and the exhaust note deep and powerful ! I couldn’t be happier.

For those with similar pipes as mentioned above ……. Even though you like the exhaust note they deliver ? These torque inserts will deliver better performance and no doubt give you a sound you will enjoy riding with all day. They come in 3 different diameters to cover a wide range of pipes.

As always I like to promote products that I feel are beneficial especially to those in our Vic Community. These Guys at DK Customs spent the time and did the testing to bring to us in all the MC world something that actually works for what I consider an age old dilemma of exhaust choices and sounds. Especially for the Vic community that has little to no exhaust choices anymore. For the $$ spent I think they’re worth a look.

Here you go. Keep in mind these are not my mufflers. They are in fact V&H full baffled mufflers. I’m surprised this person wanted to change anything about them.
My Ness honkers are literally an empty can. I should likely see way more benefit than this Harley owner did.

Nice; how about a video or sound clip?

Also, I presume you don't get better low end for free; at what higher rpm do you start noticing less oomph?

[edit] DK's website has lots of dyno graphs showing the inserts' effect - worthwhile low/midrange torque increases and little loss (and even improvements in some cases) at the high end.

Glad you asked. It seems after a good test ride I did loose that oomph in the upper end of trying to win a drag race in my mind. A quick call to DK Customs and I was told that the baffles are tunable by turning them more to a 45* angle. I asked …. Should I have gone with the next size down ? He said you could have, and likely they would have needed to stay in the one position. With the larger 2 5/8 baffle you gain the ability to tune by rotating it. You also have the correct size / diameter to calm down that higher decibel bark at wot. So back out on the road I go for some more experimental riding.

Well.......you get to ride some more. :fiddy:
Yea but now my 11XC is back on the road with nice refresh of the motor and a Noe Martinez tune with Maximus. So I have been riding it and not the Magnum. Yesterday was a good 150 mile run for her. The difference is amazing. The tune is spot on. The motor is tight and the performance is the best I’ve felt on a cammed victory yet. The thought of a new Challenger is off the table for now.
