Thanks everyone fr your comments. I have just returned from our mammoth ride between NY & San Fran. As expected, allot of great roads, sights and stories.

Hi - I'm heading over to the US (from New Zealand) for a ride, starting in New York & ending in San Fran.
Can anyone tell me thoughts about riding through the Appalachian Mountains and area?

I can give you several thousand roads to ride around on here in East Tennessee and North Carolina...
Here's a quick list of the better known roads:

1. Tail of the Dragon (Deal's Gap)
2. US 28 (North Carolina)
3. US 421 (Bristol, TN area)
4. Hwy 360 (from Vonore, TN to Tellico Plains, TN)
5. Cherohala Skyway (TN to NC) can make a loop between it and the Dragon (3 to 4 hr ride)
6. Hwy 39 (between Tellico Plains and Etowah, TN)
7. Hwy 68 (from Tellico Plains to Helen,GA) Google this one several turns nice town Helen, GA
8. Blue Ridge Parkway (TN to Virginia) Watch for closed sections though
9. US 116 (The Devil's Triangle)
10. Hwy 70E (from Lenoir City to Harriman, TN)
11. Hwy 33 and Hwy 66 (from Tazewell, TN to Rogersville, TN)

The list goes on and on....When you get here give me a shout if you got time I can show you a few of these roads...

I would have said excatly the same roads, only add Wayah Road.

Now if you've been on Wayah Rd then you've definitely had a great riding experience in WNC! There's another great stretch called Charlie's Creek Rd., look it up. It's between 215 and 281 just south of the intersection of the Blue Ridge Parkway and 215. Also, 281 from Tuskaseegee to Lake Toxaway is great.
