These screen captures are from last Friday. This frigid weather system plunged deep into the US and the footage on the nightly news of Dallas is unfathomable. We were in this deep freeze and way colder since Feb 03 and it's finally getting mild up here again. But we can handle this cold. Our houses are built for it, we have a solid electrical grid and we sleep on natural gas pools in the earth. We have snow clearing equipment and sanding trucks as well. My wife has 2 fur coats!

Has VisionBulldog been around? I think he lives in Houston.

Global Warming at its finest. VVB has been posting plenty of cold weather anecdotes in the cop thread.

What’s absolutely unbelievable? That it gets cold enough in Texas to snow and freeze? Nothing unbelievable about that as it happens fairly regularly.

What’s unbelievable is that a state like Texas that has a great infrastructure for various energy means has chosen and planned so poorly. For decades and from idiots from both political parties.

Unstable polar vortex. When the jet stream shifts cold air over hear means warmer air over there. I just want to live somewhere that’s 82 degrees F all year long. I’ve had enough of “Ooh four seasons!”.

I have been around. Been on 14 hour shifts that are coming to a end Saturday. So far my house is doing better than most but I have a generator so we have not been stuck out like many. The Genny has certainly proven itself as valuable and I am really glad I have it.

The Jeep also proved valuable. It did great on the ice and was much less stressful driving it than my nice paid off truck. I also really liked having on demand 4x4 unlike my trucks electronic that takes a second to kick in. It was great to be able to pull the lever going in and out of ice patches. The only thing is I don't have remote start @IM12STPN . My truck does but not the Jeep. No worries though as I would just start it and then start packing my gear letting it warm up.

Yeah mate, Currumbin beach , my lady bought 2kgs fresh tiger prawns and 2 dozen fresh oysters plus a selection of high end cheeses, olives and chilli stuffed capsicums for our Xmas feast!!!
Couldn't eat it all so we drove the LandRover out Tallebudgera Valley the next day and ate the rest at the secret freshwater rainforest waterfall swimming hole.
    Won't tell you what we did after that IMG20201228174311.jpg IMG20201228174152.jpg IMG20201228174302.jpg IMG20201228174139.jpg IMG20201228174258.jpg

Bulldog, my buddy and I were talking about his desire to buy a genset for loss of power at any time. Wondering the power output of your genset. I suppose it has to be calculated then maybe take the next one higher.

My home is just over 2200 sq ft and is all electric so I went with the 22kw Generac. I was told it will run the entire home, which up until now it has. I found during these super low temps it struggled to power my heater drawing to many amps. I called their 24/7 line and they had a tech call me within 20 minutes at 0130. He told me with my system if I wanted to run the heater in these cold temps I would probably need a 36kw. He went on to say that down south 17kw and 22kw are the norm as they will usually run our entire homes and power a AC fine. Being that we primarily need them for hurricanes in the warm months they do not suggest the larger ones.

So for me if I had a gas furnace it would power it fine, or if I had a 36kw it would power my all electric system fine. Overall I am not disappointed with it and would have still bought the same if I would have known in advance. It powers small heaters inside fine which is what I normally use anyways so it is really no difference for me. The only reason I was trying to run the big heater more was to keep the pipes from freezing. Other than the heater being turned off it is life as usual washing clothes, dishes, hot water, and everything else. No issues at all.

When you are looking at one a safe estimate of cost is to double the cost of the generator. The install will match if not be beat the cost of the generator. Between the trenches, plumbing, wiring, and needed power switch it adds up.
