Have a 106 with a stage 3. Just replaced battery, starter solenoid, rectifier/regulator and installed an upgraded starter. Problem I’m having is battery drops to about 8v when starting which is causing the starter to hesitate.
is there any upgraded battery recommendations to avoid my issue?
Two things …… stage 3 ?
Battery that drops to 8 volts is a either a bad battery or you have the wrong / bad starter sucking the life out of that battery.
why did you change all the components ? Is the old starter still good ? If so try putting that one back on.
Some batteries require a good charge before installing them. And forget about those little tenders to do that. You need to use a proper charger. If you don't have one get an auto shop to do it.
8 volts isn't going to start anything and you need to get back to the basics so those trying to help have some pertinent info. Things to do/check as already mentioned above.
- Explain what you call Stage 3.
- Why did you replace all that stuff? Because of the starting problem? How long ago?
- What starter are you using? Manufacturer and part #.
- What battery?
- Disconnect any after market electrical items.
- Does it do the same thing with a freshly charged battery?
- If it starts fine with a known fully charged battery look to see if there's any drain on the battery when the bike is off.
Stage 3 would suggest (to me ) a major change in the motor such as big bore or power adder like super charger or turbo.
Stage 2 …… what most here have….. Cams, filter, tune, some type of exhaust mod.
Stage 1 …..is stage 2 without cams.
There is a stage 4 too. That would be when one switches to Spectro Golden 4 semi synthetic oil.
That’s why it’s called “Golden4” see …… the 4 means something. Stage 4 ………yeah that’s it ! :aktion086:
I've read too many opinions on what people figure each of the stages consists of that it's best to ask the author what they mean. And how many times have we heard "the battery and all the connections are good"?
Usually when I hear Stage 3 it means the previous owner claimed that in an attempt to sell the bike for more.
Just for the record Victory did sell a “Stage 3 kit” that included a new air box and cams. But that was for the 92 and 100” motors 2003-2007. Nothing for a 106.

I believe the stage thing in the motorcycle world was brought on by HD. Since it took stages to make anything they built run better.
Since the terminology exists and to some without meaning it still substantiates that a motor can be modified to perform at different levels with different add-ons and modified parts. What else would you call the same motor that performs at different levels of power output.
Buick also built their Skylarks to different performance levels in the GS platform labeling them in stages. I like the terminology and in the Vic 106 world I think my description of the different stages and your description of stage 3 is well labeled. Now @PJRo 's stage of performance ???? Is there a level 5?
Speaking of …… Where is our old friend with his 200 plus hp Hammer ?

The thing I thought was kinda funny in Victory's case, circa 2003/2007 was that air filter + exhaust + ecu flash was stage 1. Pretty typical. Stage 2 was a big bore kit, and stage 3 was cams + air box. 2 and 3 seem reversed to me.
Me too, considering a big bore kit would require a different set of cams with possible modification to the fuel delivery system such as larger throttlebody injectors etc. programmer can be included in stage one or stage two in my opinion.
Yep.....252 / 208.
Actually just picked it up today... SC needed front pulley , keyway and fresh SC oil ..... runs like a champ !!
Still makes me pee just a little.....

Had George's bike apart again last night. Recently upgraded stereo installed followed up by a new battery and I get the hey brother, bike won't start text...
Since the battery was new and tucked under the rear fender now, I went looking for the breaker and solenoid because I heard the solenoid click then the bike dies...turned out to be the battery terminal bolts were too long, even though they were tight (bottomed out) the cables were not. But with everything tied together near the battery you couldn't wiggle them to be able to tell.
I had a similar problem. My 2015 Magnum would not crank and the voltage would go from 13 volts to 10 volts before I would get off the button. The next time it would crank fine and start. This was very intermittent, but got more and more frequent. People told me it was the starter so I change it. It seemed to help, but not for long. I took the engine covers off to see what was going on inside. When I removed the bearing holding the torque limiter I found the torque limiter shaft floating around. I assumed I pulled it from where it belongs. I couldn't find a problem so I put the engine back together. Now it starts like new and the voltage never goes below 12 volts while cranking. I believe the torque limiter shaft somehow got out of line and I put it back where it belongs. Also I had the original starter taken apart and tested; the technician told me he can't find anything wrong with it. So I have a spare starter.
