I've seen a lot of drilling and removing baffles here. Does anybody have clear instructions for drilling?
I am wondering how you drilled? With the risk of sounding stupid, did you drill through the back end plate? Or go straight down the tailpipe hole in the middle?
I've seen guys drilling 1/2" holes in a pattern in the end plate.
Been looking at exhaust options but I don't want to remap ****. Biltwell seems like a great option but some saying they are way loud. Dime city seems like remap is needed.
Looking to save a buck! Pictures and or videos would be awesome
If you look in the "Exhaust Options" thread, i want to say towards the bottom of page 1 bigsbigelow posted some pictures of what you need to do it, and i have done this process as well. But the jist is, you will need a drill, a 10" extension bit, and a 7/8 hole cutting drill bit. all you have to do is assemble those pieces together with the drill and literally stick it straight down the exhaust (where all the exhaust comes out) and you will feel the drill stop. Just begin drilling the hole and you will feel it break through. If you are careful enough when pulling the drill out, the metal that you cut should be inside of the bit. Took me about 10 minutes to do myself and its definitely way better than stock. If you have any questions dont hesitate to ask
So, I did it. 12" drill bit extension, 7/8 bi-metal hole saw. Straight down the middle of tailpipe opening (doughut hole). Sound wasn't right for me, I need more bass! Then drilled end plate (back plate) using metal drill bits, using from small to large up to 1/2"...I drilled 4 of these 1/2" holes into what I would call the doughnut (which is surrounding the hole). It produced much more bass! Just drilling the baffle sound to slappy, flappy for me. Kinda like a baseball card in the spokes.
I will try to put something on here soon. I like it a lot better with the 1/2" holes, I don't mind the look too. I filed down the rough edges with a bastard (love having a reason to say that), then sprayed with flat black high heat paint. I'm not sure how it would sound with just the 1/2" holes drilled because I did the bafffle first. I just know that now its loud and has a deeper note. Now others can tell that the Octane has got some balls!
Funny story (for everyone else). I didn't like the sound of just one hole in the baffle either, so I decided to drill more holes in the baffle to open that up a little bit, and somehow my hole saw fell off inside the muffler. I couldn't leave it.. so I ended up going balls to the wall on these mufflers and cut out the small center pipe to get a magnet in there. I didn't realize it at the time, but I ended up going down a rabbit hole. The pipe is connected to a circular quad of pipes behind the baffle, and that all ended up sliding forward.. blah blah. A 10 minute job turned into an hour and a half of fun. Way better sound out of it though! I think I'm going to drill holes in the rear like you to add more bass, because that's the only thing it's lacking.
Yep, I almost lost the whole thing too cause I was checking to see how far it would go down the rabbit hole too. The hole saw kinda drops into a void behind the baffle..I was a bit worried too because all I had left to grab with was fingertips.
Anyway, the rear holes made the bass difference. I put smaller holes first but nothing sounded as good as the 1/2" holes. There are 4 holes in each pipe now. Sounds much better until I decide on slip ons.
That sucks. I had victory slip ons on Vegas low 2008, I was also disappointed. For that much money they should be more aggressive sounding and they really don't add much HP. Polaris should really take note that their overpriced stage one pipes really suck. They should actually allow customer to return these.
I agree. At the very least, they should have removable baffles and have multiple baffles available. It just makes no sense to me that they sell these things advertising them to be more aggressive, more power...unleash your bike's power...that type of BS. Why bother pissing off customers when selling something bike owners would want/like and seek elsewhere would be so much easier?
I bought (foolishly) the Victory Slip-ons. I wish I would have just drilled instead.
These slip ons sound nice at idle but at speed, they don't sound much different than the stock pipes did. So unless you want a nice mild rumble only at idle, don't get the Victory slip-ons. I can't figure out how to get the baffle out of the slip on or if there is another baffle available that is a little more aggressive. I like a deep growl that raises to a throaty roar at speed. I don't want pipes that are 'asshole loud' in the neighborhood and ear-splitting at speed. The Victory slip ons (made by Vance and Hines) may be okay for some if you're looking for something good at low speed but they just aren't aggressive enough for me.
I just didn't want someone else to spend big $$$ on slip-ons and be disappointed like I am.
I agree with you. Rather than ordering the Stage 1 Slip-ons with my bike, I wish I had waited for other options to come out. With that said, I cut the catalytic converters out of the Stage 1s and it sounds great! Remove the slip-ons, pull the 2 retention screws from each, tap them out from the front, cut the catlaytic converters off, reinsert the ends, replace the retention screws, reinstall the pipes and enjoy. It's that easy.
FWIW, you don't need to remove the pipes, but it makes life a lot easier. The ends (and attached innards) was all but impossible to remove by pulling.
Thanks a bunch. When I get my electric service restored (thanks incompetent Tallahassee city 'leaders' - will be 5 days without power after a weak Cat 1 hurricane hit this hillbilly hamlet), I'll give it a shot. Did you have the air/fuel remapped or do you have any backfiring without it being done?
I have some occasional popping when decelerating. It's very minor and I figure I'll be doing fuel management and a dyno in the spring.
