I can see how this will be very useful when someone is in search of an image of small parts such as an oil plug or a specific fastener.

I've always wanted to make a photo of a fly!
What makes a lens a "macro lens"?

Close focusing. Macro lenses have more focus movement also meaning they focus farther. This lens also shoots at a distance and does a good job of it.
A true macro can achieve a magnification of 1:1. That is, an object is the same size on the sensor/film as it actually is. A 1/8" long bug will take up 1/8" of the sensor or film frame. It generally does this by being able to focus closely.

Macro photography isn't always about getting extremely close up shots.
Here are some flower shots up close but the entire subject is in the shot.

@vindex1963: I really love your macro shots and most of all I like the two flowers in the first post. They look fantastic and the colors are amazing. Generally I love macro shots of flowers because I am of the opinion that they always look fantastic. Due to this most of the time I also shoot flower macro shots. Today for example I received exotic flowers by post and I also took a few macro shots of them because they are so beautiful.

A few of my own. The bees and bugs and flowers they love to drink from - yes, that's the bug's tongue going down into the flower.
